I chanted it for weeks mimicking Jubal, Sambag and Omar, after watching the Magic Temple and Magic Kingdom VHS my bestfriend’s dad asked us to fetch (he already ‘reserved’ it) from a VideoCity somewhere along J. P. Rizal Ext. We live in the riverside part of Comembo back then so it was a long walk but I had probably forgotten how tired I was by the time we had homemade polvoron and Magic Temple was on. They were the two best films I’ve seen in my entire nine years of existence. And you know how kids rave about things. We even sang buto, kalansay dressed up as Katipuneros in an Independence Day presentation at school.

Growing up in the late 90s and early 00s in the era of Disney animation, the only part of local cinema I was exposed to were those written and/or directed by Peque Gallaga. Unfogettable were The Manananggal episode of the first Shake, Rattle and Roll with a young Bistek and his lola played by Mary Walter and Batang X with Janus del Prado playing a Professor X-esque kid named Kontrol.  Anak ni Janice was then a popular boogie monster for kids who refuse to sleep early at night. Tiyanak (1988) is arguably the first quality horror film made by a Filipino. I even had some glimpses of Scorpio Nights back then and watching it as an adult, the controversial film still shocked me (female frontal nudity in a Pinoy film?!).
