I made friends with a retired general last night, and may have dragged him out to a bar with a gaggle of psychiatrists. 

One of my co-residents and I called out and pointed at and made faces at my old psychiatrist from the other side of the second bar while someone may have been trying to pick him up (he’s happily married) and filmed it and made him turn bright red the whole time.

And then I stole his hurricane at the third bar and drank it.

monday ends my first week of being per diem after a year of working full time at a job that was taking me away from my home, my love, my dog, my plants, my family, and myself. for so long I had wanted a full time job, and I was fortunate to have it while I did. it became almost emergent though that I step away from it.

I went to work once or twice this week knowing that I was coming and going as I pleased. we all got boogie boards and went to the beach. Logan and I took Edgar to the lake to swim for the first time. I did the laundry (a simple task that would’ve sent me over the edge two weeks ago).

just now, there is the sound of water boiling for dishes. a sound that would’ve sent me over the edge two weeks ago.

my herb garden is thriving, almost out of control. succulents I have propagated are taking to their new soil. and this morning I had breakfast. chocolate chip pancakes with bourbon-aged maple syrup. a mug of Downton Abbey raspberry rose tea with cream.

I am seeing our home in a new light — a morning light, filtered by hemlock branches aplenty. we have worked so long on our house. bit by bit for years and years, careful not to spend too much, often roughing it in too cold Maine conditions before we got to where we are now. it’s nowhere near done, but it is the perfect place for me. I’m so lucky. I have also worked so hard.

watching my partner, the absolute answer to my soul’s every question, eat at our table this morning is a simple beauty, but one I expect to delight in much more often now that I do not wake with dread each and every day. I can’t wait to do the work that fulfills me. I can’t wait to get better.

Per diem

What is a per diem project? Asking for a friend :)

Per diem is Latin for “per day”. It’s a sum of money given in addition to an employee’s usual paycheck, to compensate them for having to be away from home overnight. It covers meal costs and any other travel expenses a person might incur on the road that they wouldn’t have to pay for if they were going home at night. 

The amount can vary a lot regionally, but last time I looked, the legal minimum was $25/day, above lodging cost. The specific amount will be set in the contract negotiated for the project.

I’ve worked for companies that required receipts, and would only reimburse us for the amount we could prove we spent, and then only for food, but that’s been the exception, rather than the rule. You just know those companies were still billing the client the full amount of our per diem, and pocketing whatever we couldn’t claim. It really does a number on your self-worth when you’re peeling wet receipts off a WalMart parking lot in order to try to claim money that should already be yours by rights.

I emailed my per diem manager my availability and never heard from her,... do I go or not today? I don't want to not show up if she booked me but I also don't want to work, or show up and have them keep me just because I'm there.
