The staff, Adam and belle do a all night rave in the castle. The Prince gets drunk on the finest French wines and champagne.
adam is a lightweight and is gone after one drink. belle sits down, gives mrs potts the hairy eyeball, and commences to challenge her to 10 rounds of shots
lumiere and cogworth always get wrecked and end up wanting to duel each other. plumette and clothilde always have to drag them away from the halberds section of the armory
‘armory? don’t u mean armoury?’ now lumiere is trying to snog cogsworth
garderobe gets wildly drunk and designs outfits for everybody. belle is trying to down her seventeenth jello shot while swathed in purple satin
interestingly, cadenza cannot play piano when he is drunk. however! he develops mysterious ukulele skills he never has when sober
maurice and pere robert are just on constant ‘stay hydrated’ duty for everybody else
chapeau has cornered a bimbette and is regaling her with his theory of the universe, because for chapeau a good glass of reisling always brings out his love of quantum mechanics
belle couldn’t make it past eighteen and mrs potts is laughing and chugging a long island iced tea
So I know the live action Beauty and the Beast isn’t meant to be an accurate portrayal of the period (the corset/stays issue comes to mind). But there was one thing that struck me while watching it as odd to be included even in a modern popular culture version of history. How completely un-influential the Père Robert seems to be. They actually changed it from the cartoon version where Belle gets her books from what appears to be a library/bookshop set up to going to the church and borrowing the priest’s personal reading material. So clearly he, the religious leader of this eighteenth century-ish community, approves (actually encourages) of a woman reading. And not even just religious texts, we know for a fact he gives her Shakespeare and probably other fiction.
We even see him stepping in to help Belle pick up her clothes after the villagers dump her laundry contraption. Think about that. The local priest, down on his knees helping this girl pick up her half washed clothes. Which were dumped by people trying to punish her for teaching another girl to do the thing the priest encourages her to do. You don’t think that’s going to give these villagers pause to re-evaluate their stances? The man who they listen to every week in hopes of preserving their immortal souls is clearly taking Belle’s side and they just walk on by?
Then when Maurice is being taken away to the asylum Père Robert actually does speak up (surprisingly the first time he really directly tries to admonish the people in this ongoing tension in the community) saying he needs help not to be locked away. And goes completely ignored. Again, this is one of the most influential, most respected person in a community like this and literally no bats an eye at his disapproval?
Granted this would be coming on to the age of enlightenment and not everyone would be super religious. And I am by no means saying Gaston as a military officer and probably wealthy member of the community (the red dye in his coat was not cheap) wouldn’t also be influential. But the situation isn’t portrayed as a competition between the man of the cloth and the soldier, there’s no debate of who knows how to deal with monsters better or whether this is a time for prayer or action. No, the priest is just largely ignored right from the off. Honestly that would have been interesting and a way to further demonstrate how Gaston’s fear mongering manipulates people into hate and violence instead of them all just coming off as always being pretty callous and closed minded until they’re suddenly all happy and friendly in the end. It could have played out with the same ultimate result of the villagers following Gaston but let there have been a dialogue or some kind of back and forth between Gaston and Père Robert with the villagers caught between for a little bit. It just feels very strange that they added this character who had the potential to create some complexity in the villagers but just...didn’t.

Robert looked up when he heard the sniffling from outside the door.
It was late, late enough that the sky was on fire and the shadows were thick and reaching. In windows, lights were blown out as the night came sneaking into Villeneuve. It turned the small chapel into a haven of shadows and dancing candlelight, soft and gentle on day-tired eyes. Robert wasn’t unused to the people of Villeneuve making their way to the chapel. People felt safe there, protected against whatever beasts had risen up to nip at their heels. So, when Robert heard the tiny cries, he set down the book he’d been reading (he always read before bed) and went to go see what unfortunate needed help.
When he opened the door, the girl who’d been sitting there, back to the doorway, gasped and jumped backwards, falling over with a start in the dirt. She blinked owlishly at him, face red and tear-sodden.
He recognized her, of course. Belle Durant, daughter of the artist Maurice Durant. The pair kept mostly to themselves. Robert generally saw them when they showed up at the chapel nearly every Sunday, very polite and quiet, singing along to the hymns, although also whispering to each other during lulls in the service. While they were hardly unfriendly, they were very private people who rarely mixed with the rest of the townsfolk. Robert had never seen Belle at the school -
Whispers on the air, the sweet scent of roses -
Which was right, of course. The schoolmaster had never let girls into the school, not for as long as Robert could remember. Such a shame, really.
He knelt down carefully in front of Belle. “What’s the matter, Mlle Durant?”

Can we just talk about Pere Robert? -helping belle pick up her spilled laundry -”This man needs a hospital, not an asylum!” -Remaining completely stoic and calm while Gaston fear-mongers -lefou standing with him, looking more afraid about the townspeople than the beast -he’s so important to me
reason to love #batb17: when belle shows the beast, the only one that is not afraid apart from Belle is Pere Robert. And what makes this unique? The only one in town who read apart from Belle. Lesson: Read and you wont be afraid.
Pere Robert, aside from Maurice, is the only person who understands Belle’s love for books. He is not an uncultured ignorant like most in the village.
Even if the existence of such beast is unbelievable, Pere Robert knows Belle is smart and trust worthy. If she says the Beast is a friend, he believes her. This man is was sent by God. God bless Pere Robert!
