So, pre-curse prince. After his mother died and his father became more abusive to him, and the servants more or less stood by, Adam slowly begins to feel he will never be part of a “family” again. His father eventually convinces him that such thoughts are unworthy of a man who is to rule a country (really, a tiny circle of small towns) one day, and he slowly begins to convince himself that his father is right after all.
During the years of the curse, he sees how much more tightly knit they become, a found family, watertight, always there for each other. He resents them for it and, over time, feels he doesn’t deserve to be a part of anyone’s family anymore--and hearing the servants laughing as they have fun only makes him feel worse, especially when that laughter dies as soon as he enters a room. But then Belle comes along, and gradually he remembers what it is like to love again, and soon he feels he does belong to someone, that perhaps there is hope after all for him. Maybe he is worthy of love.
Post-curse--while overjoyed that he and his staff are all human again, he still flinches the first time he walks into a room, only for the laughter to fade away when he appears. He nearly panics, remembering how it always happened when he was a Beast. Several seconds pass before he realises that they didn’t fall silent out of fear or apprehension, relaxing when he sees that some have immediately smiled at him.
“You look like you just walked into a room full of ghosts,” Lumiere remarks, “Unless we look that bad? Say it ain’t so!”
The others laugh, as does Adam, but more uncertain, still hovering in the doorway. Mrs Potts sets out another teacup and points to an empty chair.
“You look like you could use a cup of tea. Come sit down--even a prince can spare a couple minutes of his day for tea.”
Adam gently tries to decline the cup of tea, not sure he should really join what appeared to be a very involved conversation before he walked in.
“Don’t be daft,” Mrs Potts ambles over and puts a gentle hand on his back, “You belong with us. And whatever this is that’s troubling you will seem less troubling after a bracing cup of tea.”
He tries to tell them it’s fine, he’s used to laughter or chatter dying when he enters a room. He doesn’t want to intrude on a conversation they clearly had many times over the years--a happy one that did not include him. He was used to it.
“Then get un-used to it,” Cogsworth speaks up, “Now that you’re no longer a terrifying Beast--”
“Cogsworth!” Lumiere interrupts him, “Mon dieu, mon ami, you think that will make him feel better?” He gives an apologetic grin to the prince, gesturing to the empty chair, “Just ignore that old fool and come join us!”
The prince, seeing they aren’t going to be persuaded easily, reluctantly joins them, and a strong cup of tea is placed before him not a moment too soon.
“Drink up!” Mrs Potts encourages him, “You’ll feel better for it.”
He expects them to keep talking to each other, laughing among themselves, like he doesn’t exist, but to his shock, they’re all chatting to him as much as to each other--perhaps more the former than the latter. They ask how Belle is, what she is reading right now, or of the newest inventions she’s dreaming up. Adam cracks a joke without thinking, and is stunned when they laugh appreciatively--a thing that had never happened for a long time.
Seeing that perhaps they are giving him a second chance, now that he has changed for the better, Adam decides that they deserve a second chance too. Maybe he can be as close and comfortable with them again as he once had been as a child, before his mother had passed away. While a part of him will regret the lost years, he is quick to remind himself that he is only in his early twenties, that he still has a lifetime ahead of him to mend what has been broken, to bring back the days in the sun he once knew when he had been closer to the servants long ago.
