Ableism RAWR.
Yesterday, some ableist person tried to tell me that if Stephen Hawking can be accommodated and work and be successful, that anyone disabled or ill can work and be successful and support themselves and contribute to society, and they don’t deserve basic decent treatment, equality, respect, to have their needs met (basic needs or things like new clothes, vacations, entertainment), or anything good in their lives if they don’t work/earn money/contribute to society. He couldn’t comprehend or imagine that there could be, as I was pointing out, people who are truly too sick and/or disabled to work (some too sick or whatever to get out of bed), or that some people aren’t lucky enough or rich enough or supported enough to get the accommodations that would allow them to perform. I’ve heard this before from ableists showcasing a few people with prosthetic limbs who can participate in mountain climbs/races etc as proof that anybody disabled or ill can do these things if they try, we are just too lazy to try (not that the pain and exhaustion might kill us and certainly would make it not worth it and the opposite of fun, and why do we have to prove ourselves to you, anyway?)
