If you’re into magic tricks and the art of illusion, this blog might actually be useful to you, in addition to entertaining. If you’re not then it won’t be either of those things. Oh well: I guess life’s just a veil of tears for the non-magical community.
Anyway, if you’re just getting into magic- particularly up-close card magic- you’re going to run across a lot of different sleights and flourishes and it’s important to know what the fuck the difference is. Sleights are, in essence, the physical processes and movements that allow you to create an illusion. For example, the Emsley Count allows you to count through a set of cards without exposing one of them (trust me, you’re going to need to hide cards a lot in magic, so this little fucker’s a real life-saver). It’s a sleight, because it allows you to do something that can be integral for the functioning of the trick.
In contrast, flourishes aren’t used to make a trick work (at least not in the mechanical sense): they simply provide powerful visual effects. Flourishes often look borerline-impossible or out-of-the-ordinary, so they lend a trick it’s air of magic. Sure, I could just make the Ace of Spades show up at the top of the pack after shoving it into the middle (and that will confound a lot of people). However, it would be better if I could make it leap out the pack, turn gracefully over in the air like a salmon barrel-rolling it’s way upstream and then catch it my left hand (the card I mean- not the hypothetical salmon. My advice to anyone aspiring to be a magician is to learn a lot of sleights before thinking about flourishes. You can perform magic without flourishes but not without sleights: they’re the foundation for everything you’ll do. Learn several versions of the Emsley Count, learn a couple of sleights for moving a card to the top or bottom of a deck and learn a few false cuts. Also, the Hammond Count and Rumba Count- that last one will take you ages to get (probably), but the things you can do with it are mind-blowing.
Anyway, that’s your berock: Emsley; Hammon; Rumba; false cuts; control techniques. Get those down and you’ll have the tools to understand and learn a reasonably-size repetoire of tricks.
Once you’ve learned enough sleights, you can do things that seem flat-out impossible, right under folks’ noses- you won’t need flourishes to draw gasps of astonishment. That’s when you can go right ahead and learn a few flourishes anyway, just in case you’re one day called upon to impress your way into a woman’s/man’s/robot sex slave’s knickers.
