LUtober 2025 Day 15: Child
Wind lashes out. Warriors has a talk with him and realises something he should have known sooner.
***
“Everything alright over here, Wind?”
Their Sailor looked up, met Warriors’ gaze with eyes shadowed with exhaustion. He turned back to the sunset quickly. “Fine.”
Warriors sat down next to him, spread his legs out before him and leaned back on his hands. He kept his eyes on the sunset as he said, “Alright. But you understand why I am worried, correct?”
Wind said nothing.
“Most ‘fine’ folk do not snap at their friends and storm off.”
“I know,” Wind murmured. “I’m… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.”
“I know,” Warriors echoed. “Did you want to talk about it?”
Wind was silent for some time. Warriors waited, had endless patience for his young friend. Something had been bothering him for some time now, if the exhaustion told him anything, and for some reason, his trouble had manifested as irritability today; Wind had lashed out at them all, had spat harsh words, eyes narrowed with a hatred Warriors had never seen before. While the rest of the group stood there, stunned, Warriors had rushed after his friend, determined to listen, to shoulder this burden, to help fix this.
“You all keep treating me like I’m a baby. I hate it!”
Oh. This again. Warriors had thought they had moved forward from this, had not realised they had left Wind behind. “What do you mean?”
“Our Champion, he was treating me like I don’t know what I’m doing—and then Sky joined in! They keep treating me like I’m a child.”
Warriors did not understand. “But… you are a child?”
Wind growled, turning away. “That doesn’t mean I want to be treated like one. You all think of me as incapable. Did you forget I’ve been on my own adventures? More than half of you.”
They… had been doing that, hadn’t they? Pushing him behind them in fights, not letting him cover night watch, fussing over his wounds, even when they were minor. “I am sorry, Wind. I did not realise I had been… I of all people should have realised the way I was treating you was upsetting you. I will do better. I will fix this.”
Wind turned to him, eyes wide as if he had expected to be brushed off once again. “Really?”
“Of course. I will talk to the others about this too, okay? We will all do better.”
Wind brightened, that bone-deep exhaustion lifting from his face. He lunged, latching onto Warriors’ waist and drawing him into an embrace. “Thank you, Wars!”
Warriors smiled, set a hand over his young friend’s back. “Any time, my friend.”
