Meta eavesdropped on period-tracker app's users, SF jury rules

Meta lost a major privacy trial on Friday, with a jury in San Francisco ruling that the Menlo Park giant had eavesdropped on the users of the popular period-tracking app Flo. The plaintiff’s lawyers who sued Meta are calling this a “landmark” victory — the tech company contends that the jury got it all wrong.

This is crazy, but I just read that in the UK:

'Last December the National Police Chiefs’ Council issued new guidance on “child death investigation”, advising that women’s devices be checked for period tracker apps'... Link

That, combined with the mood in the US, shows how tech is being turned against people who have periods.

As everyone is so dependent on phones these days, a radical suggestion is to go old school: use a paper calendar or diary to track periods instead.

Keep one with a pen in your bathroom if necessary. The tech isn't worth the convenience in countries where it can be turned against you.

I keep getting ads for period tracking apps and I cannot stress this enough, if you live in the USA, please don’t use them. If you can avoid it, please don’t download these.

It is becoming increasingly unsafe to have XX chromosomes and have a menstrual cycle in this country but one thing you can do is avoid using these apps.

Please, use a calendar and track them by hand, but do not trust this kind of data to an app right now.

Let’s Dial Down Some (Maybe) Ovulation Freakouts

We get a lot of concerned queries from young people who tell us that not only did they engage in sexual activity but, uh oh! They were ovulating too! They are often freaking out and convinced that they will become pregnant. When we ask how they know that they were ovulating the answer is often "I use a period tracking app." But figuring out when you are ovulating is actually a bit more complicated than just tracking what days you had a period on. So we want to set the record straight on ovulation, period tracking apps, and just how babies are made. If you'd like to learn more about ovulation and how period tracking apps work you can read it here:

“AND OMFG I WAS OVULATING, TOO!!!!!!!” This sentence is becoming familiar to us. More young people seem to be developing some new knowledge about fertility cycles. I think that’s great. Well, kind of great. Thing is, lots of the information you’re getting, or think you have, is often dodgy, only half the picture, or just flat-out wrong.

I saw a post about period tracking apps being in danger and they recommended a particular app that wasn't made for it. Which is fine and all, but I'd like to recommend a different one: Euki.

It's made by a nonprofit org and it has a ton of features:

ZERO (yes, zero) personal data collection--it all stays on your device.

According to their privacy policy, "The App does not collect, and is not capable of collecting, any user information." (The downside is if you forget your optional PIN, that's it.)

You can set a PIN. Better yet, if you're being forced to open it and you don't want to, you can enter "0000" and it shows a fake screen!

You can regularly delete data, or do it all at once.

It's bilingual in English and Spanish

It offers period prediction features, a customizable calendar, appointment and medicine reminders, reliable information, and links to other orgs

It's free.

But don't trust only me (and Euki). MORE THAN A WEEK LATE IN YOUR CYCLE

If you ever missed a month, I guess it's safe to say the bois will automatically track the next cycle based from the previous month where you had your cycle.

Example: The cycle previously started at Feb. 13. If you miss March, the bois will track the next cycle on Apr. 16.

If the cycle is far too late, the bois will assume the cycle started early. Then the predicted date will adjust.
