Plant of the Day
Monday 11 September 2017
In the glasshouse corridor of Cambridge Botanic Garden, U.K., l noticed the curious fruits and seeds of Pleuropetalum darwinii (perlas negras, black pearls). This tender evergreen shrub is a native to the wetter areas of the Galapagos Islands. The plant has a compact habit and is described as easy to grow, but it will not withstand drought or cool temperatures below 15°C (60°F). Flowers are produced throughout the year, but the best flushes of the small orange-yellow flowers are in late spring and autumn.
