There are two yellow lights blinking in rhythm underneath a desk. Those have to be some kind of computer or electronic lights, don't they? And they are blinking in rhythm, aren't they?

Or are they seeming to stare at you on occasion? There were a couple extra seconds between that set of blinks, weren't there? Or was that just your imagination?

Did the shadows under that desk just move? Or was that just a trick of the light? You could have swore something moved. But maybe it's the way you're focused on that perhaps not-so-rhythmic blinking of those yellow lights that's got you seeing things out of your peripherals.

Artificial Irreverence

"Ahh, Klick, good to see you. Please, come sit down- or well. Ahem. Come join me!" Boffle requested, only too late realizing that Klick's anatomy wasn't exactly one made for sitting. "Good afternoon sir. I do hope you don't intend to invite me for tea and biscuits next- I am quite busy this afternoon. If we could- why is it you've summoned me here?" Klick asked pointedly. Boffle fumbled a moment. He never did like scolding his staff, and usually preferred to ease into less pleasant topics after pleasantries. He reached over to a small stack of documents and sighed. "Well, unfortunately it seems there have been a number of complaints about you from the resort's guests." Boffle began, flipping through the pages, "Here it says when a guest complained, you told them to go to the other hotel. There's no other hotel on the island Klick!" "No, not on the island." Klick agreed slyly, "They're free to take a ferry back to the nearest city if they'd like." Boffle shook his head and moved on to the next complaint, "Another guest said when they asked you to take out the trash you responded you weren't looking for a relationship right now. Really now! Is that any way to treat a guest?" Klick chuckled a bit at his own joke at the guest's expense, "Well, it certainly isn't any way to treat me! Just because I'm a machine doesn't mean I'm a common servant! You of all people should know how hard I've worked to become more than that." The smaller robot shot back, his propeller whirring a bit faster than before. "Of course, and I do appreciate everything you do. You're absolutely irreplaceable." Boffle responded calmly. "However, the way you've been treating guests, well it's become an issue." he continued, gesturing with papers now in both hands. "I've seen it myself on a few occasions and I can't keep ignoring it. Why here... A guest complained they didn't like their room. You changed their reservation to a storage locker!" Klick chuckled lowly, "They didn't think their original room was too small- or expensive- after that. Besides, in some countries they'd consider those to be 'efficiency suites'." Boffle shook his head before placing a gloved hand where a face should be and thinking for moment. "With as much as you interact with guests, you really must behave more politely. Perhaps it is your lack of empathy!" Boffle projected, sitting straight up like an exclamation point, as if he'd simultaneously discovered both the cause and solution. "Or, just maybe, I'm overworked and overstressed." the smaller bot countered, "Have you by chance approved my request for an assistant... or five?" "Now now, don't try to change the subject. What you need is an opportunity to get to know our guests better. Understand them! Empathize with them. See them as people and not just obstacles to getting things done. Take the rest of the evening off from your regular work, and use that time to get to know some of our guests on a more personal level. I expect a full report by tomorrow morning!" Klick looked exasperatedly at Boffle, who had now materialized a smile running from nonexistent ear to nonexistent ear. Klick knew once that man got an idea like this in his head there was no convincing him otherwise. Unfortunately, Klick also knew that not doing his usual tasks that evening simply meant they wouldn't get done, and would mean even more work the following day. Abdicating his position Klick started to fly towards the door, and responded in a defeated voice, "If that is what you wish, sir." "Oh come now Klick, think of it as an opportunity! You might even make a new friend!"

OPEN STARTER (MUTUALS ONLY) // The cool night air reminds her that she can breathe, even though there’s a garbage bin just across the alley. Inside, the Bronze is hot and suffocating in its expectations and the loneliness that comes with being in a crowd and not getting enough attention. Until this mysterious gentleman came along and invited her outside for a more intimate discussion. He even holds the door open for her on their exit, making her smirk in a ‘yeah you’d better treat me like the royalty I am’ sort of way, but mostly in a ‘the bar is so low yet I’m swooning, bask in my shame’ sort of way. A short walk from the entrance of the Bronze and the man takes her hand and turns, sporting a cocky smile and smolder that would make anyone’s knees weak. But Cordelia is on the receiving end, out of anyone else of the club, to be clear. She smiles sweetly at him. “So, what is it you wanted to––” 

Wrinkles. Wrinkles and yellow, beady eyes morph his face from out-of-town hunk on tour to rat person or so-called vampire right before her eyes. “– Oh you have got to be kidding me! How is a girl supposed to tell her potential dates from her zombie gang leaders, hyena people, and domestically abusive mutants around here anyway?” She takes weary steps back as she watches fangs sprout from the vampire’s mouth and advance on her with a deep growl rumbling in his chest. “As Sunnydale’s most eligible bachelorette in a town of homicidal psycho demon freaks, I am completely set up to fail here!” And in tonight’s case? Possibly die. “Y-you know, preying on a helpless, innocent girl is really just pathetic. Whatever happened to the sanctity of the challenge of a real hunt? Talk about Beta.” The growl, this time, is more like a roar and sends a shock of fear through Cordelia’s body. “Okay! Okay, we’re sensitive. Totally fine. The soft, follower type? So underrated on the attraction scale.”

“Speak” Sytria said firmly, yet calmly, golden serpentine eyes scanning the newcomer “What is you need?”

"Hey, ummm... Sorry, this is a bit awkward... for both of us, I imagine. But, ah, you see, you're in my closet, and I'm afraid I can see what you're doing in there right now. So, um, if you could just... maybe... not do that anymore? I'd- I'd really appreciate that. Thanks."

"Need some help with that?" comes a voice behind you, deadpan, like the person is either bored or trying very hard to make sure you believe they are.

Upon turning to look, you can see what looks to be a woman in her late 20's standing in the arcade doorway.

But she doesn't... look quite alive.

Actually, several things about her are rather dead, most notably her eyes - or lack of eyes, rather. There are none. There are empty sockets that are instead filled with a bright yellow light. And her skin - it's deathly pale, almost translucent, and it's melting. It seems to be more fluid than solid, kind of like oobleck, and flows in a constant downward motion, like it's going to leave her bones bare. And yet it doesn't. It melts and reforms before your eyes, which is baffling, and yet there it is.

Once you get past those anomalies, the rest of her is quite normal. Cute, even. Her eyeless face is framed in shoulder-length sandy-brown hair that has a black bow in it. And she's wearing a summer dress bedecked with miniature Kuromi and My Melody figures, and a pair of big black boots, which stomp over in your direction just now.

You're at the claw machine and you'd been struggling with it, but you hadn't realized that she'd been watching you. The claw machine is her specialty, and it pained her to watch you struggle - but not the part where you were struggling, rather the part where someone was making a mockery of the claw machine.

"Move," she says, taking your place at the machine should you allow her.

Moments later she has the plushie you were struggling to get, and is handing it over to you.

Eva was ready to skip to the next chapter when she heard the doorbell. It was weird, she wasn’t expecting anyone, that’s why she was in her pajamas with a half ended bottle of red wine and some chips. She had finished correcting her students’ exams and now she just wanted to relax, but that didn’t seem to be the case. 

She stood up, leaving her glass on the coffee table and approached to the door. However, when she opened, she blinked rather surprised. “What...? What are you doing here?”
