I am thinking about how Grantaire saved Enjolras again and I’m thrashing shrieking writhing about it!!
(I’m like 60% sure that some of this is from a fic or a post but I can’t for the life of me remember which one so if anyone knows please please tell me so I can credit it and also bc I need to know if I am capable of formulating an original idea)
ANYWAYS OK SO THE MOST LOVE CONFESSION OF ALL TIME! but this isn’t about how it’s a love confession actually this has nothing to do with romantic love!! This is about how Grantaire saved Enjolras!
You may be asking, but he didn’t! They both died, they just died together.
And Grantaire can’t save his life. He can’t stop the bullets. But that matters so much less than what he does do, which is that he saves Enjolras.
He saves him.
Because Enjolras is above all else a believer. He believes in the dream of a better world. He believes the world can get better.
Enjolras stakes everything on his belief in the people, and the people don’t come. The people don’t save them. The people don’t care. He bets it all, and he loses everything, and he’s left standing there alone. He’s about to die alone. He believed in the people, that they would fight for a better word, and they didn’t come. He’s going to die alone.
And then.
And then Grantaire.
Grantaire, the one person who Enjolras couldn’t believe in, who he had finally declared was incapable of believing, who Enjolras had placed his faith in before, at the Barrière du Maine, and been let down—Grantaire. It’s Grantaire.
The people don’t come for Enjolras. The people who he believed in, they do not come save him.
But Grantaire does.
Grantaire comes for him, and Enjolras is not alone, and—GUYS GOD!!! GOD!!! I CAN’T—-
Grantaire saves Enjolras, because if Grantaire, who doesn’t believe in anything, who Enjolras had thought would never fight for the dream, Grantaire is there for him—if Grantaire came to save him—and Grantaire came to save him—
Oh god, guys. I weep, fuck.
If Grantaire can come to stand by Enjolras, if Grantaire can believe in his dream enough to die for it, then Enjolras is saved.
Because then when Enjolras dies—he dies himself. Enjolras can die believing, because if Grantaire can believe enough to come for him, after everything, then someday, the people can rise.
And, God, someday they do.
I am going to manually remove my own heart and throw it into the sea—
bc oh god like. what if you loved a god who lost his faith? and it was your belief, then, which restored his faith in humanity, and it didn’t save your lives, but because of you he died still holy? still a believer? and he died hopeful? because of you??
*bloody shredding noises*
