8th/9th pass Weyr leadership
Between the red lines every cell is one year, otherwise they’re just roughly proportional. I have no clue who this helps, but I had fun with it!

also it’s weird but cool rereading books you loved as a kid and finding the things that made a MASSIVE impression on you that you’ve carried for a couple decades now
good and not-so-good (there are some WEIRD class distinctions in Pern that im not sure ever get addressed? like ... wtf is the deal with drudges?)
that now crops up in your own writing like:
- disguises being revealed by careless elegance (lessa’s hand on the birthing-woman’s arm, and her quick telepathic hiding of it)
- the blissful happiness of being clean after years in hiding
- the hero whose guiding heroic trait is patience and discipline (f’lar waiting years and then springing into action after he fucked the right person to be weyrleader THIS SERiES WTF THO)
- moar stuff im sure ill find!
My problem with AIVAS is that it’s not NECESSARY
The pernese don’t need deus ex AI, they’ve spent the last decade plus rediscovering their ancient history all on their own. And yeah, it speeds things up a bit to have a machine that magically tells everyone exactly what they need to know and do, but tons of other things could serve that purpose.
Imagine how much more fun it would be if the history of the first crossing and Landing was discovered when someone saw the murals painted at Honshu, and microbiology info was hidden in Wind Blossom’s labs at Fort, and a normal old computer with some files detailing the plan to move the red star was uncovered, along with Emily Boll’s desktop photo of her family.
Imagine the awe and eeriness of the pernese learning exactly what they need to know while touching tbe artifacts of their ancestors! But instead we get AIVAS rolling out lists of bland facts and taking the fun out of everything
Menolly and Sebell’s dynamic is that she takes after Robinton and has a custom bright blue outfit made for every major gather and he’s been wearing the same random tunic he found in a storeroom to perform since he was an apprentice
She’s at it again!
Queen shit
Craaaaazy how the most crucial developmental period on pern (the two years between the Southern Continent being officially “opened” and the discovery of AIVAS) happens in like a page and a half of Renegades, objectively a pretty forgettable and irrelevant book that isn’t even really about wider-world politics until the last little chunk
Ah yes, it’s all the weyrs of pern and we’re Modern now so the weyrwomen occasionally get offhandedly mentioned as being present at meetings
Gender equality win!
I think Piemur should get to narrate the whole series
