Something To Celebrate

I celebrated the one year anniversary of you leaving. I celebrated who I've become. I celebrated what I've accomplished in one year, and pushing through intensive suffering to get here.

I took the jewelry you gave me and threw it in the ocean. Not out of anger or spite, but for release from the things still holding me to you. I couldn't sell my beloved ring, nor think about somebody else wearing something so sentimental to me for years. So now the ocean holds it for me.

I burned my favorite picture frame of us, because I still felt you tucked away in the bag that held it. I burned a card from you because the words no longer meant anything.

I hope you don't think I'm erasing you, because that would be impossible. And I would never dream of erasing you. I just need to finally, fully let go of you. I hold pieces of you in other ways that I will never let go of, but it was time to part with the pieces I could.

So goodbye old friend, my first true love. Thank you for giving me much to celebrate this past year, for helping me grow in unimaginable ways. I'll never forget you, but I'm celebrating letting you go. And it was the best thing I could have done for myself.
