his tongue darted out to moisten his lesser lip, his greater one alike before he tilted his head. ❝ should i be concerned or not? ❞ he questioned, though he answered the question himself not long after he asked the question. ❝ i'm thinking it's more towards yes, that i should be concerned. ❞

Zuko lay motionless on the stiff mattress, the dim lantern light flickering across the dark red bandages that wrapped the left side of his face. His breath came in shallow, ragged pulls; every inhale sent a sharp, burning sting through his skin. He didn’t know if it was from the burn or from the shame that curled like smoke in his lungs. The room was too quiet. It left him alone with his thoughts, and that was the cruelest part.
When the door creaked and broke that silence, Zuko didn’t look. His body tensed, instinctively ready to lash out —until he recognized the familiar, slow gait. “I don’t want to hear how this is a lesson,” he muttered, voice hoarse. “Or how this will make me stronger.” His good eye burned almost as much as his wound, but he still didn’t blink. “I begged him. I begged for mercy. And he—” his voice cracked, rage cutting through the pain like lightning. “He looked at me like I was nothing. Then he made me nothing.”
He turned his head, just slightly, wincing as the bandages brushed the pillow. “I’m banished, Uncle. For speaking out in a war meeting. For caring. For not being… him.” His fists clenched beneath the thin blanket, jaw tight. “I’m supposed to hunt the Avatar. A ghost. That’s the only way he’ll take me back.” Zuko’s voice dropped to a whisper, barely audible. “Why would he do this to me?”
Finally, he looked at @personaei, raw and broken, and furious.

HAYLEE WASN'T USUALLY the sort to go against the rules... unless she felt it was for the betterment of others. classroom CHATTER wasn't going to get them more ready; she strongly felt that the team needed to start getting out and really proving they could work together. it was like cheerleading... you could be in the gym going through the routine over and over, but if one didn't bring it in front of an audience, then it was n e v e r going to shine.
...okay so cheerleading and fighting evil or demons or whatever weren't exactly the same thing, but haylee was growing restless. having the ability to turn into an over eight foot tall monster and rampage kind of caused one to feel a bit closed in when they weren't allowed to explode.
"moooooorgan, come onnnnn. as long as we work together, we can accomplish anything, huh? the two of us will rock it. you've got the brilliant plans and patience, and i've got the literal monster and brawn. we can take out just ooooone itty bitty spire together? what better way to show hope and the others we're listening in class!"
