Mass communication has taken over the way we interact with our peers. We get instant responses from the people we’re connected to online whether it is an encouraging reply or simply a “like” on the tweet or status. While private messages via social media, texting, or email are still used frequently between close friends, it has become common for a distant relative or even a complete stranger to be “in the loop” about your life simply because they follow your social media accounts.

I think that mass communication has also affected the ways, and how often, we connect interpersonally. For example, I don’t talk to my parents every day (forget about a friend from high school or my second cousin). They feel adequately updated on what I’m doing based on my social media posts. Of course this doesn’t give a deep look into my life or how I’m doing emotionally/mentally/physically, but it lets them know that I’m busy and overall okay.

Often time’s personal activities become the center of our mass communication. Considering most social media users are not brand representatives or corporate executives, a lot of our posts have to do with the party we went to last night or the football game we’re at today. This is not to say that every time we do something we post about it, but this is becoming more and more common. It’s normal to be watching Snapchat “stories” and see something as casual as your friend having a night in watching Netflix and eating grilled cheese. If you have a fun night out or go cliff jumping, however, you’re almost certain to share this because it’s exciting and you want people to know what you’re up to.

I think it’s funny how much social media actually does factor in to our personal activities. For example, the other night I went to a rooftop party with some of my friends. Before we had even arrived, a few of my friends were discussing different caption ideas for a picture that hadn’t even been taken yet. We are so dialed in to social media and the appearance of our posts that some may argue it takes away from our personal experiences. I think that it is important to live in the moment, but it is interesting to watch how we as people evolve and how social media is influencing that evolution.

Our media and phone usage is almost innate at this point – sometimes we check it without even thinking about it. Just last night I was doing homework with my suitemate and I made her put my phone on the other side of her, away from me. It’s so easy to pick up your phone because you got distracted by a text, and the next thing you know you’ve spent twenty minutes scrolling through Instagram. Sometimes I go to use my phone for something educational like Google a question or a definition, and yet suddenly I’m wrapped up in the content on my timeline. Mass communication has become a part of our daily routines; it is often one of the first things we check in the morning and last things we check at night, and everything in between. It is both distracting and beneficial, but it is certainly here to stay.
