i think about translation and especially (for obvious reasons) nonfluent translation a lot: is it better to be able to read a translation which may be incorrect or convey the wrong connotation, or to have no translation available at all?
i don't think there's a single right answer here, and i also think it depends on how formal the context and how likely the translation is to be wrong and how explicit that uncertainty is made. in practice i do talk about translation despite my lack of fluency, because there are some things that realistically are not going to be translated by native speakers, and because i think it can be interesting to talk about specific dialogue choices that don't necessarily translate directly in more detail, and because no translation is perfect but i find the nuances of how we all try to communicate across a gulf of understanding deeply fascinating. but it is fraught! and i am constantly aware of the danger of saying something incorrect or misleading.
