for the ask game: top 5 iconic lines from QL series! (from velvetxviolet)

@velvetxviolet hi and thank youuuu! this was very fun to ponder, and picking only 5 was very hard! I tried to focus on lines, rather than moments (if I hadn’t, my list would probably be quite different) and also on the iconic part (so not just my favourite lines or the best, but some that are snappy/catchy/memorable). I also focused on Thai QLs to narrow my choices. Now, keeping the best for last and so my personal winner for the end:

Number 2: "Isn’t it difficult enough to be born poor? And now you’re gay?" Uncle Jim, Moonlight Chicken.

Out of context, a very funny line that would be iconic for its sheer memeability alone. Within the context of the show, a heartbreaking glimpse into Jim’s fears, wounds, and frustrations with his lot in life. Its clumsiness is, for me, part of the appeal: Jim is not a particularly eloquent man in general, and here he is panicking, worried that his nephew will share the same fate as him, and that it is Jim's fault because he couldn’t set the proper example for him. It’s a gutting moment! but also simply a really funny line. Iconic for sure, and Moonlight Chicken is an excellent show: if you haven't seen it yet, go for it.

Number 3: "'Gorgeous man with clear skin found dead in a crop-top.' My dad will recognize me right away." Style, The Heart Killers.

I know for a fact that multiple people watched the show after seeing that line out of context. If that's not iconic I don't know what is.

Number 4: "Is killing people a gender-specific task?" Mae, 3 Will Be Free.

On a superficial level, I find delightful that we’re using a girlboss clapback to justify a little revenge killing. Women can do anything, even murder! Mae’s exasperation at Ter’s chivalry/machismo, here, is quite funny and very real, but also a good example of what makes their strange dynamic compelling. But I also think there are layers to putting that quote in Mae's mouth. To the fact that Ter is, specifically, being chivalrous toward a trans woman, and that she's having none of it. And I do really like how this show explores violence and gender. Despite (or maybe in part through) its love of Girl Power posturing, the way 3 Will Be Free deals with feminist issues is my favourite out of every Thai shows (and many non-Thai ones as well) I've watched, and this quote is just a cheeky example of it. I cannot recommend this show enough.

Number 5: "I'm your pet aren't I? And I'm hungry now. And you walked out! So I had to come find my owner." Pete, Kinnporsche.

Sorry about that one, I'm aware it stretches the definition of "line" a little bit, but I simply had to mention it. Kinnporsche happened to be my very first Thai QL, and though I don't know that I would recommend it (it's complicated there's nuance etc) it definitely rearranged some wiring in my brain. As I've said before there is something to characters lowering themselves (like say, calling themselves their ex-tormentor's pet) in an act of defiance/self-actualisation that is entirely insanity inducing to me. Pete here is desesperate and panicking, but he's also openly angry, and making demands for the first time in a long time, and its... idk. The wording can make one cringe the way witnessing two people's kink that you don't share can make one cringe, but the scene had me holding my breath. You have to sit with the discomfort (no, these two people "should" not be in love) for the scene to work, you have to accept the premise, but if you do it's an incredibly rewarding climax to their arc, and something rather unique that feels like it really belong to these characters, and that moment. And like, I do believe it changed the game a little, and helped open the way for more risky, ambiguous romances in Thai QLs! Kinnporsche the series adapted a work that, from what I read of it, was interested in its characters first and foremost as vehicles for sexy moments (not trying to throw shade: there's a long, long tradition of these type of works) and then found itself having to make an audience believe in their love. I would argue it pulls it off, here. Iconic To Me!

AND OUR NUMBER ONE, OUR UNCONTESTED WINNER:

I'm not sorry for that one. Some are born great, some become great, and some have greatness thrust in their ninth hole.

there was this very fascinating post abt enemies to lovers i was reading the other day that was abt how its a fantasy abt the intimacy of being known at your worst with someone with the power to annihilate who does not annihilate, but instead who knows you in a way that means you don't have to pretend. which is true abt like some part of the erotic draw, but it was very fascinating to me that the frisson of being ideologically opposed or having different goals in like life didn't enter into it at all and so there's evidently no eroticism being derived from either negotiating a middle ground or in characters being emotionally conflicted abt ideals versus emotions, or characters walking away from an ideologically destructive edifice and love as redemptive power. to me it is simply not enemies to lovers enough if there isn't some genuine difference, a genuine source of contention that they need to resolve or negotiate, bc the question is whether the love will be enough or not. that's a sexy question to me, anything less just leaves me feeling cheated which tbf is also how i feel abt 90% of enemies to lovers stuff that i try to read/engage with bc there is very little interest in even having a genuine barrier or source of contention that needs to be navigated, that requires one or both of the characters to like, change their entire worldview for the other. surface level love stuff, i want the deep intimate eroticism of love being fundamentally earthshaking, worldbreaking ffs.

#or the possibility of having your goals and values partly or entirely subsumed by those of a lover #thinking again about porsche…

fadel internalized his pain at his partner "leaving" him and (re)focused on the job and then two years later bison comes to him as a shining mirror of his previous innocence and hope and desire for freedom and he shuts it down to prevent bison from facing the same heartbreak and rejection, thus cementing bison's need to use outside means to get what he wants and dooming both himself and fadel to the exact heartbreak that fadel was trying to protect him from in the first place.

#so it’s both of their desperate desires for love and freedom that bring those things to them. …….eventually.#if a tragedy had a happy ending indeed <3 #the heart killers

fascinating that not just phingphing and way but also pan acknowledge phingphing's framing as having committed an act of love to protect way, damn the consequences, when her literal actions were to bully another teenage girl in revenge for writing gay fiction about her boyfriend which, as a downstream consequence, caused him to be expelled for getting in a fight after being homophobically teased about the story.

(though i don't read pan's line here as agreeing phingphing was in the right, so much as recognizing that people have their own justifications which may or may not be responsive to censure. is having done something for love exculpatory? and according to whom?)

#prev....once again i would love to put tonhon in my healing psychological torture chamber (watching the eclipse)

kim's relationship with kana is framed comedically — with pan-as-kim's shock and discomfort and with the sharp contrast between how she looks and acts as the teacher compared to on their date — but this scene also viciously edges right up to the line of making you think they actually might get physical before doing a fakeout at the last second, and explicitly states that they can't do so because kim is not an adult. deeply uncomfortable scene but quite compelling!

#i say 'get physical' partly because the show seems to equivocate between kissing and sex but that's a separate point #also there was a warning on both locker room conversations last episode ('characters have inappropriate behavior; do not imitate')#that is not present here and i do wonder what determines that choice #of course the person behaving inappropriately here is an adult and not relevant per se to the presumed high school audience of this show #still.#the shipper #may liveblog tag #also wow i made two image posts about soda instead and forgot how hard it is to write image descriptions for this show. but i persist
