Namjoon Kim as a Boyfriend

-Both in personality and in zodiac. Namjoon is a Virgo.

Clint Barton (ISTP) and Phil Coulson (ISFJ) Relationship

This was particularly hard to do in light of most recent chapters in Untold Stories, but it also seems fitting to do this right now at the same time. I wanted to see why Clint and Phil became friends and later family and how their personality types have some things in common and some unique differences.

When it comes to friendships, ISTP seem made for Bushnell’s Law of game design: Easy to learn, difficult to master. With their well-rounded and interesting array of hobbies, people with the ISTP personality type have no trouble at all making acquaintances to share their hobbies with. It’s getting beneath the surface to become an ISTPs true friend that is the hard part. This leaves them with many friendly acquaintances and friendly faces to hang out with, but only a few people who they feel truly understand them. A lot of this comes down to the ISTPs not wanting to be bound to any particular person or activity. They need their freedom. ISTPs live in the present, enjoying whatever life brings, and feel no real obligation to shift course on account of others’ plans. Commitment can be hard for them and they firmly believe that everything can be changed. They enjoy a little competition also. ISTPs are unusually popular, almost in spite of themselves. Their open-mindedness, interesting hobbies and relaxed attitude are attractive to a remarkably broad range of personality types. 

As it says above, it can be really difficult to really get to know an ISTP and the same goes for Clint. Phil spent a lot of time and energy trying to see past the facade Clint put on for everyone. It took Todd and Dan even longer and still, they don’t come close to the type of relationship Phil and Clint have. Phil had to be flexible with Clint and adapt to his many unpredictable traits. Phil had to gain respect and trust before Clint even considered talking to him about personal matters. But the huge thing was that Phil was patient and didn’t try to push too much. The worst thing Phil could have done was back Clint into a corner and they would have gotten nowhere, but he didn’t do that and let Clint set the pace.

Given how generous ISFJs are with their warm praise and support, it’s not surprising that others enjoy their company enough to call them friends. The challenge is to be considered a friend back - people with the ISFJ personality type are introverts and a little protective of themselves, but they also need to be able to connect on a deeper emotional level. Most of their friends are made through comfortable and consistent contact where they have time to get to know each other little by little. As their friendships develop, ISFJs’ sense of loyalty may push them to lean ever more on themselves to meet their friends’ needs, to the point of neglecting their own. The real friends, those close to inner circles, are the ones ISFJs truly cherish for their quality of character and quality of discussion.

Phil saw something in Clint when he first met him, was able to see past Clint’s facade. He saw a kid who had been hurt over and over and made some pretty big mistakes to survive. But he also saw a great potential and a desire to do good. This brought out Phil’s natural protectiveness and as he got to know Clint more and more, that protectiveness became stronger and loyalty became stronger. Phil started to praise Clint when he did something well, provided a snacks and drinks in between sessions so that Clint wouldn’t be hungry or thirsty, tried to get him roof access as much as possible in training and on missions, was always there to talk if Clint needed it, and the list goes on and on. This was how he gained Clint’s trust and friendship in the beginning. Words didn’t necessarily always need to be spoken between them.

These two types are classified as intriguing differences. They are likely to be similar in character, but have some key differences which may make them seem especially intriguing. These two types have a good balance of commonalities and opportunities to challenge one another.

As they are both introvert types, they know how and when they need to give each other space to “recharge.” Phil gave Clint a lot of space in the beginning and really only pushed Clint when he was trying to figure out why Clint was punishing himself. But he understood more than most that Clint needed solitude. For introverts, being around people all the time can become very draining. Phil gets this, and sometimes he needs that time too.

As they are both sensors, they both live in the real and the concrete. They will enjoy similar topics in conversation, mainly about past and present happenings related to, people they’ve met, places they’ve been, experiences they’ve seen. Both like language simply, straightforward and literal. This is where Phil and Clint have a lot of respect for each other, they see the world in the same way and that really helped them get to know each other in the beginning. They both don’t sugarcoat what they say to each other and don’t beat around the bush. This is how Clint comes to realize that he can trust Phil’s word. 

A thinker and a feeler can make for an interesting dynamic. The thinker can help sort through logical issues, but may seem harsh to a feeler. The feeler can help the thinker understand emotions more, but can be seen as too emotional and flighty to a thinker. However, both these types can make for a very healthy balance. Phil being an ISFJ is key in this because ISFJs are unique in that yes they are feelers, but they are very analytical and logical, and yes they are judging, but they do not always see things in black and white and are receptive to change and new ideas, and even though they are introverts, they have well-developed people skills and robust social relationships. This is key in Phil and Clint’s relationship. 

A judger and perceiver can surprisingly get along pretty well. The judger prefers to make plans, and the perceiver has little problem with deferring. Problems can arise when the judger becomes too imposing, or when the perceiver’s flexibility of schedules can be seen as an annoyance. This doesn’t really seem to affect Clint and Phil all that much. Phil is organized, but instead of coming up with a complete plan he gives Clint more of a guideline so that Clint has flexibility and freedom to do what he needs. Phil trusts Clint enough to let him to this. He knows that Clint has good instincts and that he is very intelligent. With Phil doing this, Clint makes an effort to have a plan that he shares with Phil. The compromise with each other, which makes a really good friendship.

Obviously their friendship grows and changes throughout the VPU. Clint and Phil become more like brothers and then even later, more like a father-son relationship. Both characters don’t have strong family ties. Clint’s parents died when he was very young and Barney betrayed him in the worst possible way. Phil just doesn’t seem to have any family. This is what makes their relationship so special, they were able to create a new family, one that they could always count on. Phil was the person Clint could always count on, he was the brother he deserved and the father he didn’t get to have. They have a really strong bond and as Bobby Singer says, “family don’t end in blood.” There personality types are very fitting for this and they learned a lot from each other.
