After Iris went back to living with the homeless group, Michelle kinda had a moment
We don’t see this, not really, so I wanted to take some creative liberty and see this thing from her POV
Basically she had a bit of a breakdown, because she did spend like three years looking for her sister, discovered that she’s schizophrenic and unmedicated, and then eventually lost her again
Yeah Iris was still there but she wouldn’t come home and she wouldn’t accept help
And it broke Michelle a little
Marjan was there to see the breakdown
They had been dating for about 9 months by then and Marjan had been a major emotional support nearing the end of the search for Iris
(Also it’s good to note that no one knows about Marjan and Michelle. They’re literally living together at this point but somehow have kept it a secret. It’s not that they’re really hiding it it just, never comes up? Well, Paul knows because Paul knows all. They know that Carlos will find out eventually and then tell TK, but that’s a bridge to cross later)
So when she found out about her going back to being homeless she was already driving to get Michelle
And the second she got in the car she just, burst into tears
They sat in that hospital parking lot for almost an hour while Michelle cried and Marjan just held her and promised she did all she could
But to Michelle it felt like she really failed
Her sister had been sick and she just didn’t notice, not in time
And yeah she was still alive and seemed to be able to hold her own
But she wasn’t letting Michelle help and it was all so much at once
Over the next few weeks she spent... a lot of time deliberating
She loved her job at the 126, she did, but something didn’t feel right
All this time she had been searching for her sister and now that she found her it just felt weird
Helping the homeless was what had helped her find Iris
If she had never worked with that group she may have never realized she was right there the whole time
And to Michelle it was a bit of a wake up call
She wanted to help people, she had taken an oath to help people and it’s what she knew she was meant to do
But maybe EMS wasn’t the right fit
Helping the homeless, bringing medication and resources and medical care to people who wouldn’t get it otherwise? Something about it just stuck with her
She wants to help so much
It was her calling, she realized
She was a bit anxious to talk to Marjan about it because quitting is... a huge step
And it meant they wouldn’t be working together
But of course her girlfriend was 100% supportive
And so Michelle got to work
She took some classes on counselling, mental health advocacy, conflict resolution; everything she could think of
She found a group that was looking for a full time advocate and medically trained employee
And then she put in her two weeks
People tried to talk her out of it
She was thinking too fast, was just upset about Iris, how could she throw this all away
But it’s what she was meant to do
Marjan just loved to see her so passionate about something
Putting all her energy into this, getting excited when she learned she got the job; it made her so happy
That was enough for Marjan
Marjan doesn’t let anyone talk shit about Michelle’s choice
When Tim was calling her selfish she defended her
But what we didn’t see was afterwards when she caught up with him and Nancy and was like
“She’s helping people, that’s all she ever wanted to do. This is what she thinks is best and I for one am proud of her. If you really do care about Michelle, then you should be proud of her too. You’re certainly in no place to call her selfish, or judge her at all.”
Nancy hugged Marjan after that because she agreed completely 💖
And she just keeps defending her and praising her for helping people 🥺
She’s so proud!! Her girlfriend wants to help people so much and she works so hard and no one is allowed to deny that or insult her choices
Marjan does get anxious when Michelle has long shifts though, especially when they run into the later hours
She knows she might be out alone in the alleys and under bridges and homeless encampments just aren’t the safest place
So she texts her whenever she has a chance to make sure she’s okay
And she definitely stays up to wait for her to come home
Michelle chastises her for it though, especially when Marjan has to work an early shift the next day but she’s still awake at 2 am waiting for her
Cue Michelle immediately tugging her off the couch, blanket cocoon and all, and nudging her towards their room
And she makes Marjan lay down while she gets cleaned up, insisting she rest because she has work
Marjan wants to stay up and talk to her though 🥺 (but 9/10 times she passes out before Michelle comes back from the bathroom gsjsk she’s sleepy 🥺🥺🥺)
They definitely text and call each other any time they have free time at work
Just to check in
And if one of them is home early or up before the other she’ll cook breakfast/dinner and make coffee
The coffee pot in their apartment is always on lmao
On the rare chance they both have the day off they love to spend it together
Michelle almost always wakes up before Marjan on these days and she’ll be making breakfast by the time she gets up
And she does try to help but Michelle playfully swats her hands away and tells her to go rest on her day off
Marjan doesn’t mind much though, but she doesn’t go back to bed. Instead, she’s content to just backhug her girlfriend and watch her cook 🥰
Also I’m gonna write a oneshot about this later but
Marjan takes calls to heart, every call hits her so hard even if she doesn’t show it at work
So a lot of the time she’ll get home from a bad call and just, burst into tears the second Michelle asks how her day was
Because she can’t hide anything from her and Michelle knows how much she cares about people
Every time without fail Michelle is there, to hold her when she cries and promise her things are okay
She did her best, she always does. Patients die and people get lost but she knows Marjan did everything she could and she’s saved way more people than she’s lost
And Michelle will make her tea or sit with her for as long as she needs, making sure she asks if Marjan wants space to pray/be alone or if she wants her there
They’re always there for each other 🥺🥺🥺
So yeah this AU is basically just Michelle’s vocation through her perspective and how hard it was for her to come to this decision but how important it is to her. And lots of Marchelle fluff and hurt/comfort because I’m a clown and they’re in love 🥺🥰
