It was an unexpected ending--a dreadful one indeed. And I hadn’t suspected a thing. If only I heeded the signs, the warnings, maybe then could I have prevented it. But, alas, I did not. And now here I am, dead in my grave.
In the week proceeding my death, something was off with my butler. He was much kinder than he had ever been. I knew he indeed loved me, but he had a great distain for the false eye which I wore. He was even terrified by it, so much so that he would do anything to be rid of it. Then oh so suddenly, he acted as if it never bothered him at all. But I saw straight through the mask he put on. I ignored the signs of my impending doom. I hoped that possibly he had just tried to overcome his terror. I was wrong, very wrong.
It was a very dark night when it happened. Something was very off with my butler particularly that night, I couldn’t put my finger on it. As he had done the past week, he stayed up late in the night, while I took my rest. I hadn’t been able to sleep very well that night, always half awake. Just as I was about to fall into a deep slumber, suddenly the loud noise of the lantern cover woke me. Someone was in my room. I jumped up from my bed and yelled “Who’s there?”. Silence was the only thing I heard. I just stood in my bed, waiting to hear anything, to hear if there indeed was someone in my room. I stood there in the dark for a whole hour in silence. I heard nothing. I saw nothing. A groan of stifled terror came from my throat. I began to wonder if it really was nothing at all. So I tried to comfort myself, saying aloud, “It is nothing but the wind in the chimney.” Or, “It is only a mouse crossing the floor.” It was all in vain. Soon I calmed down, and I lay back in my bed. Then, I heard a loud yell from my door, and I knew. I let out a shriek, one and only one. I was grabbed by the collar and dragged out of my bed to the floor. My mattress was soon pulled over and on top of me. I couldn’t breathe, I was being smothered underneath the mattress. I could feel all the air being released from my body and not returning. I struggled and tried to fight my way out, but alas I was old, feeble, and weak. Slowly I felt death’s cold grip on my soul. It crept up every inch of my body, till I could no longer fight it. Everything was fading. My senses dulled, and soon a new light emerged. A light that was warm and welcomed me into a new undiscovered land. It was all over. But I was not sad, this was better than the life and cruel world I had ever known. And for the first time, I felt peace.
