This one is really dear to my heart, a portrait of my sweet sister's chameleon, Viola.
Viola was a rescue chameleon, dropped of at a pet store where a friend worked. Viola was sickly and had what appeared to be a large burn on her side. Her owner had none of the appropriate equipment Viola needed, and told our friend at the store that if they didn't take her she would just take the chameleon home and let her die.
My sister, @jordisstigander, can't stand suffering and adopted Viola, bought all of her equipment, took her to vet visits and nursed her back to health. They bonded to the point that Viola would reach out to my sister when she put her hand in the cage and knew to open her mouth when it was medicine time! Viola became a cherished class pet for her students. Her gentle nature helped calm kids with anxiety and panic attacks; her slow methodical movements made her a safe pet for others who might have been nervous around animals.
Unfortunately, Viola has since passed away, but not before knowing love and security provided by my sister and a whole group of kids who adored her. This painting is a memorial of Viola's gentleness and how much she helped the humans in her life, despite the terrible things people did to her.
With this story I feel I have to post a PSA: Please only adopt exotic pets (or any pets) if you know the work required to care for them! Many exotic creatures, like chameleons, need specialized care and end up dying in terrible conditions because of unprepared owners who didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Viola was fortunate to have someone like my sister find her and care for her!
