August 2021: Grave & Harvest
My queen & I went to estate sale today. When I was in the backyard at the estate sale, I noticed a stand of understory trees & shrubs that had been mowed around. That seemed odd so I went to investigate & discovered this pet grave nestled amongst the Mahonia. A reminder that houses have stories that began & ended before we first step foot in them. When you find a remnant, treat it with respect:
We went to Plot 420 today to do some harvesting & watering. The squash bugs were wearing out the zucchini plants so I sprayed them. We take a minimalist approach in using pesticides & observe best practices like waiting until late in the day when pollinators aren’t active:
Tuesday’s Plot 420 harvest:
We haven't been to this woodsy area in about 9 months so when someone mentioned "the cross" while guiding us to a particular fish, I was a little confused.. until I stumbled upon this...
I can only guess that this is a gravesite for one's beloved pet fish, who didn't seem to live for very long unfortunately.. the cross has "Lt. Bubbles" written on it in green sharpie, along with the dates "March 31 2018" and "August 13 2018", and there are pink rocks used in aquarium tanks scattered throughout this little mossy area, though mostly right over the grave and in little pockets in the moss..
I have no idea why one would bury their pet fish in this stretch of woods,.. unless this fish was caught here and someone attempted to keep it (only for it to pass), I don't quite understand why someone would go through the trouble of coming out here to bury Lt. Bubbles.. However I guess that's why the little cross intrigues me so much.
My best guess is, whoever kept Lt. Bubbles over his short life, wanted him to be close to the water again, so he could have a peaceful afterlife. 💖
Rest in Peace Lt. Bubbles 🕯️💖
Once more tending your grave. It's beautiful now. I made it beautiful for you. But I feel so empty, so hopeless. This is all I can do for you now. And It's nothing, nothing at all. I should have protected you. You should be here now, so that I could care for you and not your grave.
I tended your grave today. That's all I can do for you now. And every part of my being screams that this isn't how it's supposed to be. You're supposed to be here by my side, not in a hole in the ground. My fingers should be digging into the soft fur on your neck, and not into the dirt under which you are buried.
Right now it's almost your dinner time. I should be filling your bowl right now. And after that we should be going for a walk. Right now I ought be caring for you, making your day happy. But now all that I can do for you is to tend your grave.
