Curbside find of the week. These 100 gallon stock tanks run for around 130 bucks & this one was free. We're going to use it to make a container version of a hugelkultur bed:

These are some of the summer squash that volunteered in our front bed. They appear to be a hybrid of lemon squash & either straightneck or crookneck squash:

August 2021: Grave & Harvest

My queen & I went to estate sale today. When I was in the backyard at the estate sale, I noticed a stand of understory trees & shrubs that had been mowed around. That seemed odd so I went to investigate & discovered this pet grave nestled amongst the Mahonia. A reminder that houses have stories that began & ended before we first step foot in them. When you find a remnant, treat it with respect: 

We went to Plot 420 today to do some harvesting & watering. The squash bugs were wearing out the zucchini plants so I sprayed them. We take a minimalist approach in using pesticides & observe best practices like waiting until late in the day when pollinators aren’t active:

July 2021: Extra Humid Saturday At Plot 420

It rained pretty much every day last week so the road to Plot 420 has been too muddy to navigate. Luckily, there was no rain today so a late afternoon trip was in order to see how things were doing:

The caterpillars have ravaged one of our corn patches. We had slated spraying the corn with BT for last week but all the rain prevented that. Hopefully, the rain will hold off long enough for us to spray in the next couple of days:  

It is a little hard to see but the deer on the right has his first points. They’re covered in velvet right now:

This redwing blackbird took flight right as I snapped this photo. It was dumb luck that I caught him right as he hopped off the tree but before he spread his wings:

June 2021: Happy Juneteenth, Y’all

It’s 22:30 here in the City of Good Abode & I can hear the celebratory fireworks in the distance. 

Saturday blueberries: 

My queen & I spent most of the day at Plot 420. We were glad to see the honey bees enjoying the white clover at the plot: 

I tilled up a new corn patch: 

All plowed, planted & watered. This year my queen has been asking me to walk the corn in. What I mean by “walk in” is, after my queen has drawn furrows & placed the seeds, I walk over the seeds barefoot to press them into the ground. Next, I duck walk the dirt back into the furrows then I do a merengue over it to tamp the dirt down so it makes good contact with the seeds: 

We also planted our okra seeds today. We did five rows with the 3 center rows being Clemson Spineless and the 2 outside rows being Burgundy okra. A little artistry in planting is good: 

There is a narrow no man’s land about a foot or so wide between our chicken wire fence & the electric fence of the gardener behind us. A couple of zinnias came up in it from last year’s zinnias’ seeds. They add a little color to that area which is mostly filled with cocklebur:  

We hope you had a chance to celebrate the day. Juneteenth being declared a federal holiday won’t end systemic racism in the U.S. but, like confederate monuments being taken down, it is a step in the right direction. We should take the time to celebrate these victories no matter how seemingly small or symbolic they are. They are waymarks on a journey that continues to promise to be long & difficult. Celebrating them should help rejuvenate our spirits for the battles ahead:
