CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA / PAGLIACCI is State Opera SA's favourite double bill & is brought to life as Italian tradition, passion & rustic justice burst onto the Festival Theatre stage. Rosario La Spina takes on the challenging feat of performing both leading tenor roles.

Using the official adverting artwork as reference RedBikini bought a still image to life. As a collective the production & post production team made a complex camera move look simple.

Statewide Super > Kickstart Christmas > TVC x2

November 2016 - Christmas is a magical time for a child, but some kids, right here in South Australia miss out.

Statewide Super & South Australian not-for-profit organisation Kickstart for Kids have teamed up this festive season to bring some happiness to children less fortunate.

Adelaide Freelance Director / Producer Heath Riggs approached Pete Hall to shoot something simple but effective. For me lighting played an important part telling their story in 30sec.

Atomos Shogun & Ninja Flame Firmware Upgrade AtomOS 7.1

Overnight Atomos released an update for the Flame series & added a swag of features making the Shogun & Ninja Flame even more powerful.

Shogun & Ninja Flame 7.1 release notes (July 4, 2016)

Features:

Added HDR support for log video from JVC and Red cameras.

Improved accuracy for the color gamut.

PQ output has been added for playout to HDR monitors and televisions.

Improvements to accuracy and resolution in blacks when using AtomHDR mode.

A visual improvement has been made to the AtomHDR slider for easier access.

While in AtomHDR mode, a simplified HDR waveform line has been added to easily set the correct slider position for the dynamic range of the scene.

New options for AtomHDR include WFM Auto which automatically setting the HDR level for the current scene’s max brightness and WFM HDR which scales the WFM to view the HDR range to the full height of the WFM.

The waveform monitor will now display a percentage scale based on the input log mode.

Slow motion is now available in playback mode. Pausing video playback will automatically display the slider above playback controls and give you access to forward and reverse speed adjustments.

From the Battery page, there is now the option to manually override battery selection. This is designed to be used for the Atomos Power Station or other external power solutions.

Bug Fixes:

Fixed an issue where some files exported from NLE's did not play audio.

Fixed an issue where waveform monitor graticules were not visible with some menus on the screen.

In late 2015 I got a chance to play with, …. well kind of, the latest Mercedes Benz cars on show at Mercedes Benz Adelaide. The Mercs are very stylish cars indeed. RedBikini gave me a great opportunity to work with DoP Adrian Price. I accepted the role as Gaffer & loved it. In my view lighting plays such a huge role in any production so I couldn’t resist, especially lighting cars. Unfortunately Adrian was unavailable for the second day so I was asked to step up. Between us we shot a lot of vision. This TVC is the result of a combined effort but ultimately based on a style set by Adrian.

RedBikini was asked to deliver something engaging on a tight budget & I feel they did that.

This is the third of three TVCs produced by Adelaide Animation & Visual Effects Studio, Resin for the iconic Royal Flying Doctor Service.

I was really excited to be involved with such a project as it was new territory for both myself & Resin. It involved the use of a motion control rig allowing us repeatable camera movement over a three day shoot. It will become clearer as the other scripts are completed as to how motion control became a key factor in the production. To complement the camera movement we animated on-set lighting. This was something of a first for us, animating flicker & changing levels throughout the shots provided seamless lighting changes from scene to scene.

As always, it was incredible to work with such talented people. Because of the complexity of this project, it was extremely important that every crew member in each department applied their skills to a high standard, resulting in the success of the final product.

At the Bench: Importing LUTs into Sony FS7 by AbelCine

In continuing to educate Sony FS7 users, or potential users, this article released by AbelCine demonstrates how to import a LUT into the very popular camera.

AbelCine’s article:

“In a previous blog, Andy showed us how to create LUTs using Sony’s RAW Viewer software and then import them into the Sony F5 & F55. You can use the same workflow in Sony RAW Viewer to create and import LUTs to the FS7 — but what about when you want to use a LUT that was not created by Sony software?In this blog, I will create a 3D LUT in DaVinci Resolve and then import it into the FS7. Using the steps outlined in the above video, any .cube LUT can be held in the FS7’s memory. Having the ability to use 3D .cube LUTs expands the capabilities of the camera and allows users to draw on an infinite range of looks for footage recorded in Log or RAW.Want to learn even more about the Sony FS7? AbelCine has created & shared great articles over the years to make us all better Filmmakers, Ian McCausland's post "Atomos Shogun Features & Configurations" is no exception.

“The Atomos Shogun has become a top choice for off-camera monitoring and recording. Its lightweight and feature-rich design make it ideal for acquisition from HD up to 4K. In this blog, I take a look at some of the newer features made available through recent firmware updates, including working with LUTs, audio recording, recording HD & 4K simultaneously, and how to record a clean video signal from the Shogun.

The Shogun now has the ability to apply a 3D LUT to Log footage. This makes it a good match for the Sony a7S, which includes S-LOG2 in its Picture Profiles, allowing you to capture a wide dynamic range and providing the ability to create custom looks in post. However, looking at Log footage on a monitor can be a bit deceptive; the image can appear washed out and lacking color. A LUT (Look Up Table) converts the wide dynamic range being captured and remaps it to REC709 – the standard used for broadcast. Watch the video to learn how to create, import and apply LUTs to the image with the Shogun. Keep in mind that a LUT is one representation of what the final image could look like; unlike a picture profile, it is not baked into the recording.

I also take a look at the Sony FS7 and demonstrate how the Shogun can record HD color-corrected footage while the camera records 4K internally. The Shogun also has the ability to record external audio from a mic or line level from a mixer. I take a look at these options and offer some solutions to get professional audio results.”
