An MLA and former minister just removed from the United Conservative Party caucus alleges the health minister — and possibly the premier — withheld information from cabinet ministers deciding the fate of the Alberta Health Services board of directors. UCP caucus members voted Wednesday morning to expel Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie, who will now sit as an independent MLA. Inside the legislative chamber on Wednesday, Guthrie tabled to the clerk a February 25, 2025, letter that he had sent to Premier Danielle Smith on the day he resigned from cabinet as infrastructure minister.

Mr. Guthrie: Given that lawfare is becoming commonplace amongst activists and given that these frivolous anti-Alberta pursuits will continue from far-left organizations like Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion and given that this damages the livelihoods of hard-working Alberta families and entrepreneurs, to the Minister of Energy: is there any regulation or legislation that your department could consider to discourage activists and support companies who find themselves a victim of this tactic?
Mrs. Savage: As I was noting before, does anybody here think for even one minute that Russian state-owned companies like Rosneft and Gazprom have to contend for a single minute with the type of environmental litigation, fossil fuel divestment, clogged regulatory processes, and environmental activism that we contend with here?

Two former members of Alberta’s governing United Conservative Party are resuscitating the province’s once-dominant Progressive Conservative Party. Former infrastructure minister Peter Guthrie and legislature member Scott Sinclair were booted from caucus earlier this year for pushing back against the Premier Danielle Smith’s government and now sit as Independents. Sinclair says the province’s two-party system has become too divisive, and they want to galvanize support from Albertans who feel they don’t have a political home.
