Peter Peake: Commericals Director, Aardman - Bristol
We had the honor of having Peter Peake from Aardman animations attending our lectures to give a talk about his past & present work. Peter also had spoken about his practices and design methods and challenges whilst working in the industry.
Inspired by Hanna Barbera cartoons at a young age, Peter had always wanted to work in the creative design industry, attending a graphics course at college in Bath; he ended up teaching himself how to animate. This began his interest and skills which started his Animation career before going on to learn different designs, software and styles that you can see throughout his work. (Why do I sound like he is a student and i’m writing feedback about him??) Peter spoke about how the production approach worked and went through the different stages of taking on a project, the obsticles that he had faced and what sort of problems he had occured.
Peter’s earlier work, hilarious, slightly immature but so refreshing when seeing something original and different. The idea of just having fun seems to be a continous form of working for Peter as you can see this in his work.
I’d love to work in this manner when I get into the industry.
Pib & Pog:
Humdrum:
Aardman‘s commercials department occasionally produce one-off short films which give the directors an opportunity to try out new ideas. Often these are worked on during downtime between projects for clients. I spoke to Peter Peake, director of Pib & Pog and Humdrum, about the short film Pythagasaurus as well as a personal project he worked on in his spare time.

Pythagasaurus (2011)
Directed by Peter Peake
Two cavemen seek the Pythagasaurus, a math-loving dinosaur who can solve their problems. This was described to me as Ice Age directed by Seth MacFarlane. And that's accurate. It seems like Aardman is doing more and more great stuff and really branching out to explore new genres within animation and I am so consistently impressed with their work. This short has such quirky British humor and is quite enjoyable.
