Project turn around
I have decided to stop using Toon Boom for my animation. I find it a little overwhelming using a new software when I have a deadline looming. I made animation with After effects before - and numerous animation studios use after effects to create a lot of motion graphic work. A lot of techniques such as the rigging systems are very similar to toon boom and it doesn't effect the animation style or techniques.
An evaluation.
A statement. I hope that the film will become a success and that children will be able to watch the short film and it will help them, even a small bit to open up to discuss their feelings and emotions. The topic of children's mental health is so current and if this piece of work can help then I hope it can be used properly. The development process. The design aspect of the film had flown pretty well as I feel as though I am quite confident in the style and technique that I approached to the visual design aspect of the film. I have always been using ink and water colour and feel as though the technique worked exceptionally well for ‘Monsters’. The poem.
The poem had changed only a tiny bit during the process and the theme had kept the same throughout.
Animatics.
The animatic took the longest to do, as it was only myself working on the project the entirety of the film took a lot longer than I originally was hoping it would. If I had a proper team of people and the funds to do so, the animation could of easily been done in a few months, but hey-ho! maybe in the future I'll be able to produce even higher standards of animation!
Development of style.
The initial designs of the characters had developed into a very pleasing style that I will be using again for my next film after the degree has finished. The characters, some roughly designed or monsters also had been passed through a fine comb of design which helps enhance the world of Monsters. One idea that I was looking into was to hand draw the entire film on Toon Boom, however it would of taken even more longer than anticipated and I'm quite glad that I changed my mind for the better. Moving forwards this new style is something that I can imagine myself carrying on in the future with my next film.
Stopmotion.
One idea that I had during the process was to turn the film into a stop-motion film instead of a 2D one. Thankfully Sarah talked me out of it as I think this version of the film stands out so much better and stronger. The limited lack of stop-motion accessibility worked against me anyway though I can officially be happy to offer this film to festivals. If I did stop-motion, where would I be now? I’m not entirely sure.
Collaboration.
Thankfully, I have two close friends, Kate and Lina who were able to help me design the backgrounds and colour in props for the film as they were very tedious to do and took a lot of time up if I was to do it myself. I’m very thankful for their work as I would probably be still continuing with the film as I write this up! Unfortunately Bee Joy couldn’t help assist with the animation due to other commitments though it hasn’t affected the project and due to this the style of the film had changed.
Animation.
Yes, I believe that the animation could be more well done however I see myself as more of a designer and less about the animator. This entire project was more to do with the message behind the animation and not so much the animation itself, though for what it’s worth, I think I did a great job. There are always going to be things to tweak but i’m still happy with the outcome.
The sound.
The sound was one thing that I left till the last minute. Something that I may go back and edit again as I was the only one working on it, I ended up using free sound.org and all of the sound effects were royalty free. I quite enjoyed this process of picking out sound effects to use for my film.
Editing.
Note to self: Give yourself time to edit. I did the editing within a few days but I wish I gave myself more time to be able to edit the film. The film took over 2 hours to render all-in-all and it was very much up to the deadline.
The future.
After completing the MA course I aim to release the film into global animation festivals which will hopefully encourage growth of the project. I also would love to show charity companies alike NSPCC, child line etc this project and maybe request commissions from them to help promote the message of opening up about their emotions and feelings.
I aim to publish the film online once it’s had a fair long run on the animation festivals circuit, doing this will hopefully help adults with children - including teachers to use as an aid to encourage children to open up about their emotions.
The children's book, “The adventures of Berry & Barry”, is an on-going project that I would love to carry on post-MA. I know that the book needs reworking and reediting again but I felt as though this is very much a prototype to the world of Berry and Barry. I also need to find a cheaper alternative to Blurb - as it cost me £15.00 with a discount code to buy, which is quite a lot of money for what it is. IF I was to publish, the price needs to come down to at least £9.99!
In the future, I aim to pitch ‘The adventures of Berry & Barry’ as a TV series - as I feel as though the style and the concept of the story is something that has an audience for.
In November, Manchester animation festival is having a workshop to give advice to those who are looking to create their own tv show - which I will be attending and I will be looking for more information on the matter.
The future-future.
I aim to start my own company titled ‘LYVE LYFE productions’ with my close 2 friends, to collaborate and make new content in hope that it will offer us more work. I have decided that ‘LYVE LYFE productions’ first product is Monsters as it was a first collaboration with the members of the group, even if it was mostly myself working on it.
...and heres to the future!
Rendering...
Today is deadline day! However, I'm having some technical problems with the film due to the contents of the film however it’s going to be last minute.
On Tuesday 24th my first ever story book arrived in the post!
This is very much a prototype of what I want to create in the future. I felt as though I was made to cut down a lot of pages throughout the story as it originally had 42 - I felt as though it was a lot, and perhaps in future think more about how 32 pages can tell a story.
From this, I will be attending the Manchester animation festival, where, I intend to learn more about making a tv series and how to begin an animation studio.
Presentations
On Friday 27th, we were asked to give a presentation of our masters degree work for the new masters degree students.
My film is currently (As of 28th) not completed fully as I still have some shots to edit before being happy with the outcome.
Apart from this, there wasn’t any direct feedback for the project or the book. But I noted down bits of the film that I wasn’t particularly happy with so I ended up editing it again.
- From this, I will be completing my film by the 2nd October which will include the sound effects, music and voice over.
Feedback
Currently, the feedback from the film is still positive and is moving slowly but surely. At this moment, the progression for the film is taking a lot longer than I anticipated as I am doing everything else myself.
More writing...
Script > Storyboard > Sound & Animatic > Rough Animation > Inbetweens > Animation > Colour > Editing > Rendering > Publishing - Write synopsis, get a better idea of the story and write a solid plot. - Script: Write the first draft. - Lots and lots of concept art - Helps with environments, colour pallet, Character designs & character profiles, other characters etc. Don’t make anything appear flat, think about depth and perspective. Use the colour charts to help with depth & environments. - Think about the style and how the story will be shown in animation. - Storyboard - Think about how the story will flow. It should make sense just by looking at the drawings. Think about camera angles and dialogue. Use 1&2 point perspective to use for 3D shots. Camera shots like Panning, Tracking, POV. - Sounds should fit the characters and SFX. - Animatic - Don’t limit time. If an action should take longer then it would, let it happen. - Animate roughs, then animate inbetweens and then neaten roughs and finally colour. - Render shots and edit with AE. - Put all shots in Premiere w/ sound. - Export and publish. —————————————————————————- 1024 x 576 25FPS, 1096dpi 16:9 Stories and research are important, TV shows, movies and short animations. Think about the audience you’re targeting References on characters - research is important. Where is the heart of the story? Battling depression? Voice actors or an overall narrative? What is depression? How does it effect us and people around us? Real people have real problems. Women and men empowering, defeating and surviving and carrying on. Raw emotion, Don’t make the story childish but the animation can be. Serious and emotional story. Where is the story going? What is the message/moral? Who are the main characters in the story? What does the main character want? How do they achieve their goals? Who are her friends? Are all the characters necessary? What is the beginning, middle and ending? Which points of topics need to be explored in the story? How does the character cope with situations? Do friends help? How do they help? Wheres mum & dad?

Book feedback
When going through feedback with Sarah and Mark, we spoke about the complexity of the story and to think about the quantity of number of pages in the book.
NOTE* Most books for children contain 32 pages.
which means that I will have to pull out and reduce the content by 10 pages as I currently have 42!
The wording was also spoken about, as some of the words mayn't of been suitable for a demographic of 4 - 8 years however we also spoke about maybe including the ‘grown up’ words could do favours by expanding their vocabulary.
The design aspects were fine, the characters look charming and suitable for children, as well as the content.
I’m happy with how it’s going and excited to develop the books more. -----
With the series of books, I hope to create the characters and the world of Berry & Barry into a tv series and low and behold, at MAF, Blue zoo are going to be doing a masterclass about creating your own tv show which I'm very much looking forwards to attending!
Trying to work out the movements and the motion of parents arms fighting! It’s so hard to think of the timings of when the fingers or hands open!
