BACKGROUND:

Emmeline’s dad, Belarus ( anglicized name -- both first and last but his real name? REDACTED!! i do have a name i’m not being lazy. emmeline is just like?? i don’t want ppl knowing my business! like ron swanson! ), was a Cursebreaker from a very important, prestigious and infamous family in Shanghai. It was a bit of an economically turbulent time there and honestly? It was new, things were Belarus couldn’t watch as people picked off his family, as they had their hands in some pretty dangerous pots in an effort to keep their wealth & to keep things the way they were ( obviously failing as economic reform happened and the country got more stable -- which they didn’t want in order to retain their wealth ). But more than that, his family was rather resentful of him. He wasn’t openly bisexual but he was uhhh caught in the act when he was younger with a man! His family freaked the fuck out but he was technically their heir & the oldest, so, they swept it under the rug. Enough was enough for him. On assignment in Dorset, Belarus fell in love with the area, made it his mission to find a way to stay there. He gathered paperwork to change his name, found somewhere to live in Wizarding Dorset, made it his home! He was sneaky like that, able to cut off all ties with his family, living his Best Bisexual Bicon Life.

Then, he fell in love. Evangeline Dunn was a straight up fox. A bit cruel to him, but he broke through her walls, enchanting her, the two got married. One thing he didn’t anticipate was her reaction to his magic. Eva felt disgusted, angry, and truly, she wanted nothing to do with it. He was at a loss, really, his work was based in the Wizarding World. Magic was a part of him. He’d given up everything to have this life, and his now wife was like NAH? He left it behind, magic didn’t mean more than his relationship. He grew unhappy, to be quite frank, having to suppress something that was apart of him, something he was good at. Getting a job by the docks -- it wasn’t his calling -- but he did because they needed the money desperately. He did it for love. Eva had a job, sure, but it wasn’t enough -- especially when they had a baby on the way.

To say that Emmeline saved Belarus life a million times over would be an understatement. Emmeline Vance was born in the dead of night/early morning on November 4th, being the best early Christmas present that Belarus could ever receive. Evangeline joked that Emmeline had snuck out of the womb, as her labor was brief & Emmeline’s crying minimal after her initial birth. He agreed to stay home, take care of her, raise her, pushing Eva to try to take more opportunities at work, advance in her company. She was mildly successful, pushing the Vance family to Lower Middle Class status, Belarus only having to work a shift at the docks every other week. Emmeline was an extraordinarily happy child. Mornings were filled with chess ( “why are the chess pieces moving, da?” ‘don’t worry about it, Emmy’ ), taking the ‘tube’ into London’s Chinatown so Emme could learn about her heritage some ( “it’s our secret, don’t tell mum I can teleport” ). Afternoons filled with walks to the park, sightseeing, books upon books upon books, archery lessons, cooking dinner. When the time came, Emmeline started primary school absolutely excelling in muggle school, making both parents proud. Her parents relationship sometimes felt strained, but Emmeline felt that they’d make it through, after all, her childhood was happy. Everyone seemed happy enough.

[ MENTAL ILLNESS TW, ABUSE TW, ALCOHOLISM TW ] Years of suppressing his magic took a toll on him. He’d never snapped his wand, stopped mentally practicing, but there was something built up in his psyche, something dark, angry, repressed. One day, Belarus snapped -- he’d gone and bought everything from the grocery, the store, he’d gone on a spree effectively emptying their bank account. Evangeline was furious, screaming at her husband, putting him down, berating him, Emmeline hearing everything. A cycle continued for the next year of highs and lows -- some weeks Belarus would be the father she knew, some weeks he’d be in bed, door closed, leaving Emmeline alone to her own devices. She didn’t mind it though, because she loved him and was more so worried about him than anything else. Her mother? Angry. The anger was taken out on Emmeline, more often than not, yelling, screaming, throwing things both at Emmeline and the wall. The one glass of wine after work becoming a few bottles. This only got worse when Emmeline got her Hogwarts letter. She was more ecstatic and confused than she was angry. She felt like she’d won the lottery like she’d found a new world. Every fantasy book, come to life. She understood now why her father could teleport, why he could do what she thought was impossible -- and even after everything, Emme wanted to be just like him. [ SUICIDE TW, BLOOD TW, SELF HARM TW, HOSPITAL TW ] Emmeline was eleven years old when she found her father, barely conscious, wrists slit, blood spilling from the bathtub. [ END OF BLOOD TW, SELF HARM TW ] In that moment, she went into action. She saved his life. The paramedics kept praising her, the doctors kept saying she was a hero -- but Emmeline had simply reacted, she had simply ensured both her and her father’s survival. All she knew in that moment was that she couldn’t live without him, barely taking time to process the situation as it was too hard to do. Words like bipolar, manic depression, etc. were thrown around, Belarus being diagnosed with Bipolar II, Emmeline was glad to just have her father alive. That was all that mattered. Emme was no hero, she was a survivor. [ END OF SUICIDE TW, HOSPITAL TW, MENTAL ILLNESS TW ]

[ ABANDONMENT, ABLEISM TW ] Evangeline had had enough, planning her escape route, one foot out the door telling Emmeline to come with her. We can leave your sorry father behind. We can go. We don’t need him. He’s broken. At eleven years old, she made a choice and that was that she wasn’t going to leave her father -- even if it meant losing her mother. Watching Evangeline walk out the door, she wanted to cry, but she could not break apart. There was so much to be done. They had to survive this -- and they would. [ END OF ABANDONMENT, ABLEISM TW ]

[ MENTAL ILLNESS MENTION ] It was Emmeline who forced him to get out of bed, it was Emmeline who forced him to take her to London’s Chinatown during Chinese New Year. It was Emmeline who dragged him to the Ministry to get monetary assistance from the government, to sign up as a freelance Cursebreaker. It was Emmeline who made him the xiaolongbao and soups every night for dinner, the recipes he’d taught her to make. It was Emmeline who helped heal her father because she loved him more than she ever knew how to love herself. This was not something an eleven year old should’ve been doing but she was going to be damned if someone as smart and capable as her was going to let them rot. Fuck Evangeline Vance, Emmeline was going to show her mother, her father’s family, everyone, that the could make it without them. If it wasn’t for Emmeline’s perseverance, her story would’ve taken a lot darker of a turn. [ END OF MENTAL ILLNESS MENTION ]

HOGWARTS:

[ PTSD MENTION ] Coming from a trauma like Emmeline did, then being thrown into the Wizarding World, was a LOT for her to process. While never officially diagnosed with PTSD, she definitely suffered from it ( still does ). Her first year at Hogwarts, Emmeline was practically mute only talking to a select few. She stayed out of people’s way while she got the lay of the land, she listened, she observed. Emmeline joined Archery, Wizarding Chess and one day was persuaded to join Dueling Club by an older student who’d been assigned to tutor her in DADA. She needed the help because between blowing up cauldrons in Potions and barely turning in her assignments in class after class, they were worried she just wasn’t cut out to be a witch. They were wrong, she was gifted in DADA ( Potions? NOPE ) but just unable to express it on paper. As Emmeline didn’t want to fall behind, she took all the help she could get -- Dueling Club was her saving grace. There was no greater power to her than wielding a wand. Nothing healed her as much as her talent and affinity to Dueling did. For once in her life she felt powerful. For once in her life she felt like she wasn’t limited, like she had control over something, like she’d finally found the meaning of fucking life. [ END OF PTSD MENTION ]

While she was easily pushed around in school, Emmeline either fought back with silence, rolling her eyes, an occasional hex or just let it go. It wasn’t until she got older, seeing the ugly prejudice, the hate, the tension that Emmeline felt the burning need to stand up for other people. A muggleborn was being bullied for their blood status? Emmeline was the first one to step in, to stand up, to say something the inviting them to Dueling or Wizarding Chess Club afterwards for fun. Someone came at Emmeline? She said nothing. She wasn’t in the business of giving into their shit, but more so, she found it a struggle to find the motivation to stand up for herself. It wasn’t until her fifth year that Emmeline really found her voice, after being named as prefect, she found her place. It had taken years to get there, but she’d gotten there and that’s what mattered.

[ ANXIETY MENTION ] Every summer since her fourth year she’s had a small part time job giving archery lessons to very young kids. McGonagall is the one person at school who really knows her family history extensively, having helped her get job after job, even during the school year when she can, so she can support her father. The Ministry’s money is a good amount, but Emmeline has needed school supplies, clothes, wand polish and special dueling supplies. Things she couldn’t AFFORD, but had to for school. Things with her father are rocky, they’ve been barely able to afford therapy, often having to give him medication & potions that just knocks him out when at his lowest or highest. Emmeline has major major anxiety going to school every year, putting together an extensive itinerary & schedule for her and her father and with permission from McGonagall, being taken out of school once a month to visit him for a weekend to check up on him. Without this, Emmeline probably wouldn’t be at school. Her mother has tried to contact her, but she’s ripped up every letter, only having a dinner with her once a year so she leaves her alone during the rest. She wants no contact with the woman who left them at their lowest, who was selfish enough to just leave them behind. The free nice dinners are nice, listening to her mother’s BS? Not so much. [ END OF ANXIETY MENTION ]

PERSONALITY:

Emmeline definitely comes off as a bit of an asshole/hardass and is a prefect in school which doesn’t help the image. Truly though she’s glad to be so because she felt she was capable of holding a position of power without abusing it, hurting people, etc. In times like these, that’s important. She wouldn’t say she’s a good person, mostly due to self-esteem issues, but she wouldn’t say she’s a bad person either. When it comes to herself, she has a ton of insecurities and is learning to let them keep her from speaking up through years of building herself up. Not to let them fuck her up because in the end she is the only one she’s got. People leave, and it hurts, but always expecting the worst, preparing for it, is better than being blindsided by it. Emme learned that the hard way when her mother left the minute she could. If her own mother left her, what would stop anyone else from it? As mentioned before, In school, the first few years it was hard, she was constantly forcing herself to speak up but didn’t do so effectively until she was given the power in school as a prefect and eventually a Captain of the Dueling Club.

[ PTSD MENTION ] Due to being a Scorpio & her upbringing, she’s bad at apologizing when she ACTUALLY does something wrong due to the shame she feels, thinking she’s acting just like her mother. She justifies it a lot as well, but definitely never lets herself let it go. Emme really has grown a lot as a person since then and will continue to do so. She does like to drink when she can, though she’s really careful with it, sometimes having episodes with her PTSD where she’ll try to numb her flashbacks with alcohol, etc. Emmeline has never done a drug in her life, though she will smoke the occasional stress cig to calm down. She really hates being out of control in any sense, especially because of how her mother was drunk the year before she left. When she does go to events & parties, she gets really gets sort of appalled by people getting plastered, but will most likely look out for everyone anyways, making sure they’re okay & snark at them. Emmeline is judgemental, and though she’s able to challenge those judgements with logic, she’s still quick to judge. The Ravenclaw is judge, jury & executioner -- especially when it comes to herself .[ END OF PTSD MENTION ]

Truly, Emmeline is hilarious at times if you can get her humor. She’s got a fantastic wit, an excellent taste in sarcasm, and does the best McGongall impression in the castle. She’s so grateful for the few friends she has, especially the ones that keep her in line and challenge her. The ones who show her kindness when she needs it and she doesn’t even know she needs it ( and maybe doesn’t deserve it ). If you have Emmeline as a friend, you have Emme as a friend for LIFE. She’s loyal to the core, she will fight by your side ( something she’s excellent at doing with a wand ), she will die for them, show a softer, sillier side. It’s still extremely hard for her to open up and most of them didn’t know about her home life in school ( most still don’t to this day, as she hates sharing it ), though there are definitely things that could tip them off that something wasn’t quite alright. Like her leaving at least once a month, etc. But she never ever wanted to talk about it because the pity from neighbors she got after her father’s suicide attempt made things harder tenfold. She doesn’t want to be pitied, seen as weak or anything of the sort, especially by people who’s opinion she actually cares about.

TIDBITS:

With her father, Emmeline lives in a two bedroom house in Bournemouth, Dorset, England. It’s been a safe place still even though it’s riddled with memories of her mother & father fighting, her father’s manic episodes, her own maddening of questions of morality and humanity. There’s good memories, her father and her making Xiaolongbao, playing Chess in the backyard patio, and Saturday’s glued in front of their old TV watching movies and old Doctor Who reruns.

emmeline CAN EAT. she loves food and eats as much of it she can. her favorite food is strawberry cheesecake. second fave is xiaolongbao.

emmeline speaks french and english!! her father had assimilated so much, evangeline being somewhat racist and ugly, that she didn’t want emmeline to learn either mandarin or shangahainese? emmeline knows like some basic mandarin but her dad was like, look, you’re learning a second language SOMEHOW so he taught her french.

is still learning how to be a proper human and not just survive. NEEDS HELP!! lord knows she’s got an .........interesting fashion sense so she tries to stick to basic colors and neutrals and some NICE BLUES.

her favorite color is tardis blue and she LOVES doctor who. she does have a scarf like tom baker’s. i don’t need to embarrass her further tbh.

Agender. Mostly uses she/her as she doesn’t feel like getting into discourse with people over why they/them is a Valid Pronoun ( eternal mood tbh! ). Emmeline has never felt particularly connected to gender in general, always feeling like it didn’t fit her completely. Though she’s yet to come out, she definitely aligns with masculinity more aesthetically. Dysphoria is not something she experiences often, when she does, she sees it as lack of self esteem -- something she tries to dismiss. Even with all the information, Emme has never felt safe enough or important enough to come out, not seeing anyone who looked like claiming any sort of queerness as she grew up besides her father. She doesn’t mind being referred to as a woman, she does embrace other women as well as her female presenting-ness, but doesn’t feel like that is her gender even though she was socially raised as one. It’s a weird balance that she manages, but what it comes down is this: her gender just isn’t important enough for her to figure out atm & certainly not the most important thing about her. That’s that.

maybe an ex friend that was tired of emmeline’s BS. i could see emmeline not even opening up and just pushing them away too during bad times, so there’s that.
