Remus smiled softly, admiring the fight in his friend. It was something he wasnât sure he had, a spark he simply didnât know how to ignite after everything he had been through in his life. He took a deep breath, offering her a soft smile before moving to pull himself up onto a desk. He shifted, trying and failing to get comfortable. âI donât want you to become a targetâŚâ He admitted, letting his legs swing absentmindedly, ignoring the pain in his knees. He let a few beats of silence pass, tugging at his sleeves, clearing his throat, running a hand through his hair, unable to decide on how best to pose his question now that he was here with her, now that he had become so distracted by her project. âThis is going to sound ridiculous.â He admitted finally, eyes still trained on her pinboard. Ariel was fully aware his father was the UKâs leading expert in Boggarts. The fact that he didnât know the Charm to banish them was all but embarrassing at this point. âBut itâs the only thing Iâm not confident in. I just managed to scrape a passing grade during my OWLs without knowledge of the practical theory but now- with NEWTS⌠I canât afford to attend any lessons, I just- I canât risk it⌠but I need somebody to help me learn, Ariel. Out of everybody I know, youâre the most skilled when it comes to DADA, I know you are. Which is why I was planning on asking for your help. I- Merlin, this is so stupid, but I canât cast the Riddikulus Charm. I mean- Iâve never even tried. And if I want to have any hope of passing my exams next year, Iâm going to need to know how. Iâm going to need to be able to face a Boggart.âÂ
âDonât worry about me, you just take care of yourself, okay?â Ariel worked hard to be someone people didnât have to worry about. Her mother and uncle were always so busy, had so much on their plates, and the rest of her family didnât want to acknowledge that she existed, so she learned at a young age that she had to be independent. She had to be strong, brave, had to shoulder things that maybe other people couldnât. Ultimately that was how the hat decided on Gryffindor, even though it had considered every other house during her sorting. Ariel couldnât let anyone, including herself down on this. She especially didnât want to burden Remus, after everything going on in his life, after everything he went through, Ariel wouldnât be another source of worry for him.Â
Remus waffled through his explanation, and Ariel watched him, curious and a little confused. What was he on about? What was so difficult that he couldnât do it and needed her help? Sure, she was extremely skilled at Defense, but so was Remus and if he was struggling it had to be something important. When he finally revealed it was just the Riddikulus charm she let out a small sigh of relief, âOh! Okay, yeah,â Boggarts were pretty simple, she had been able to banish her lethifold for years, the charm forcing the robe to fall open only to reveal a simple, harmless chicken inside, âYeah I can help with that. What do you see when you see one any way?âÂ
