The Dark Lord decided to cause trouble and sent an army to attack you? Unleash The Protagonist on him, he can handle it all by himself. After all, The Antagonist stayed at home in his castle and his defeat will lead to collapse of his whole army. Everyone knows that generals in the field are helpless without a Dark Lord (who’s sitting at home by the hearth). Furthermore, they telepathically sense that their master is no longer at the helm and immediately lay down their weapons.
The Protagonist is lucky! The army is not at home, and his opponent has kept only a few bodyguards at his side. After a three-hour journey on foot between the capitals, Our Hero penetrates the chambers of The Dark Lord, who tells the guards not to interfere. A duel ensues, during which The Bad Guy's defeated. The Protagonist orders the guards to throw their master into a dungeon. Although they do not receive pay from him, they do obey him. The Hero then goes to speak to the army, who as one man acknowledges that their master was seriously evil. Occasionally, thousands of soldiers respond to the hero in unison. ...if they didn't disappear like steam over a pot in the meantime, because it was a magical army.
excerpt from a column in Czech sci-fi/fantasy/horror magazine Pevnost (Karel Doležal)

I'm being nosy but I'm SE-Asian and in my country there's a perception that asian horror films are scarier than western ones. I'm not sure how much of it is cultural resonance, like a the call is coming from inside the house thing, or different production practices. In the Czech republic and other parts of Eastern Europe, do you guys also think homegrown horror is scarier?
You're lucky I've been buying genre magazine for years.
There's a lot of whining about a lack of decent horror production world-wide these days. That said Eastern-Asian horror has pretty decent reputation here. From the top of my head, Train to Busan and Kingdom have good ratings.
As for our own... well, Czech cinematography's best times are behind us. There's a little new stuff, and it's mostly mainstream. We're a small market, and while we have great writers, films require more money, people etc. Ironically, foreign productions like us- locations, support, all those "invisible" specialists behind moviemaking... When I searched for Czech horror in past twenty years, it showed me around ten titles. Mostly shorts, and completely unfamiliar.
I mean... even that magazine I've mentioned, is sci-fi, fantasy AND horror.
