Byokihime (病気姫)
Seeing a gap in the tvtropes pages, I decided to coin a term for my favorite character trope, and this is the byokihime (病気姫 lit. sickness princess)
Masculine alternative: byokiouji (病気王子 lit. sickness prince)
In order to be a byokihime, a character must:
• Be rich / be from a rich family
• Have some kind of life-altering illness or disability (including high support mental illness & disorder), especially if they have mobility aids
• Be cunning or manipulative
byokihime characters include:
• Galatea Claude (Identity V)
• Pfle (Magical Girl Raising Project)
• Monaca Towa (Danganronpa)
• Terano Totobami (Kakegurui)
• Sumireko Hanabusa (Akuma no Riddle)
• Dr. Rachel Claudius (God Eater 2)
byokiouji characters include:
• Eichi Tenshouin (Ensemble Stars)
• Nagito Komaeda (Danganronpa)
• Frederick Kreiburg (Identity V)
• Rei Asaka (Oniisama e...)
• Louis Cyphre (Shin Megami Tensei)
• Amy Kiriwo (Mairimashite! Iruma-kun)
Here are some additional tropes that go hand in hand with this one, but they're not required
• The character has an affinity for dolls or a love of the arts in general (classical instruments, painting, acting, etc)
• The character has a parental figure that's heavily influencing or hurting them, either causing their disability or causing them to become cold/distant
• The character does not HAVE to be young, however most are
The point of me coining these terms isn't to alienate them for being disabled, I chose to do this because I'm disabled myself and see myself in these characters.
I use japanese terms because most of these characters are from anime & manga and also I couldn't come up with a clever name in english lmao. There's also a song called Diseased Princess (病気 in Japanese) by MASA WORKS DESIGN that I found in my research.
All terms that fall into this category: byokihime, byoukihime, byoki-hime, byouki-hime, byokiouji, byoukiouji, byoki-ouji, byouki-ouji, sickness princess, sickly princess, sickness prince, sickly prince, sitting princess, sitting prince (the latter two referring to wheelchair aid)
Please let me know your feedback or if you have any questions or ideas for characters who fit this trope!
