look. i think that in canon, it would be very hard for jiang cheng and lan wangji to get along due to. canon events. but I also think a lot about that three month period when he and jiang cheng were searching for wei wuxian together and how they fit together, how they see one another.
there’s also something about that moment in the lotus pods extra when jiang cheng is crouched stubbornly and angrily in the boat eating lotus pods and refusing to share with the girls on the shore because why should he, he picked them for himself! while wwx is like “omg jc how are you going to find a girlfriend like this” that reminds me a lot of how lan wangji relates to strangers as well. and im like. ah. yes.

Hey, I just read your stripper/grad school fic which was just. Amazing. It was so well executed, and I love how well every character was treated, and you MADE ME CRY about Lan Wangji's OCD. Just very heart wrenching and well written. But my question is what went down with the Wens? Like, WWX has a hero complex, and WQ apparently owes him something, and is WN undead? I assume that fiasco is why Madame Yu tossed him out and why WWX is working at the club, but I'm so curious! Thanks!

As for the Wens……. well. okay, not to get excited about craft, BUT. I wrote it with the goal of hinting at a larger, complex backstory vaguely analogous to what went down with Sunshot without having to actually develop the details so that readers could come to their own conclusions. There’s been several people who’ve asked me about it, but the fact is I never fleshed it all out. So even if you want the full story, I actually can’t give it to you! I was wondering if I could write it in such a way that would give the atmosphere of a plausible greater narrative even if that narrative doesn’t actually exist in full. I guess I succeeded? AHAHA this got a little long (surprise surprise), gonna put it under a cut.
I definitely imply that Wen Ning is undead several times, but I couldn’t tell you how that came about, just that it did. And yes, Madam Yu chased wwx out for the situation, though I also couldn’t tell you exactly why or how it went down. The Wens now own Club Yiling, but why and how? Also couldn’t tell you. wwx is working there possibly to support Wen Qing, possibly to supplement his own finances, possibly just because he wants to. He introduced Mianmian to the place after she spoke out in his defense….. but why exactly? I also couldn’t say. The mystery is the point! I wanted readers to ask these questions!
Sorry if this is an unsatisfactory answer! But the point of that subplot was always to craft a backdrop that felt rich, without needing the nitty gritty of why. It’s an illusion! And I wanted it to feel like it was always out of the reader’s grasp, in the sense that Lan Wangji actually does know bits and pieces of the situation, but those pieces are considered “common knowledge” in the cultivation world and therefore they’re not ever brought up in full. For example, this exchange in chapter 8:
“It’s from our home,” Wen Ning says absently as he pours Lan Wangji a cup. “My favorite.”
“Qishan?” Lan Wangji asks.
Wen Ning starts, splashing a little. “Oh! Um. I didn’t realize I said that out loud. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make things uncomfortable.”
“It’s not uncomfortable,” Lan Wangji says. “My favorite tea is from my home as well.” He pauses and thinks his words over carefully. “There’s nothing wrong with loving your home.”
Wen Ning looks at him for a long moment. “I hope you and Young Master Wei work things out,” he says finally.
I was thinking about a lot of things when I wrote this, loosely: the idea of loving your home even when your home/family has done something terrible; in canon, wen ning’s family really fucked up lwj’s family--did something similar happen here? maybe!; neither of them was directly involved, but you know, affiliations etc. set them up to be enemies, but they can acknowledge such things and have a good relationship anyways etc. I don’t expect all of that to have come through (because that would be A Lot and I still have a long ways to go improving my writing skills), but I thought that might give you a sense of how I was thinking whenever I wrote allusions to past events.
