Greek Ioakimion School for Girls in Fener, Istanbul (x)

One of the major educational institutions for the Greek Orthodox Minority of Istanbul is the Ioakimion Greek High School for Girls. Situated in the historical area for Fener, it was named after the Ecumenical Patriarch of the time, who gifted the land for the construction of the School. Ioakimion’s purpose was to cover the educational needs for the girls, who used to live in the middle-class neighbors of Istanbul with the provision of high quality education. The School operated from 1882 to 1988 without interruption, while the education provided was multilingual, as the classes were conducted in Turkish, Greek, English and French. Unfortunately, as other educational institutions in Istanbul, the School closed due to the limited numbers of students. (x)
