Did we ever get an answer about what is Phantom Aqua?

I looked and maybe I missed it, but I couldn't find Nomura stating directly what she is.

That being said, I think, for now anyway, it's safe to assume Phantom Aqua wasn't real at all, and nor was her boss battle, but rather just a hallucination due to Aqua slowly losing sanity being in the Realm of Darkness for so long. This is also why she had figments of Terra and Ventus, so frequently that when she finally did come into true contact with Terra's heart, she assumed he was just a figment as well.

Aqua seems to not be having a good day.

Last year, I thought about writing a series of post dedicated to re-imagining Kingdom Hearts. Basically, what these posts would’ve been are slight redirections or additions to the series. For example:

In 0.2 BBS, I would’ve had Aqua encounter a Phantom Ventus that’d blame her for everything and attack her. At some point in the battle, Phantom Ventus would draw in and consume the darkness around him and turn into something like Vanitas Remnant but with Ventus’ face. All of this would’ve been an illusion caused by the darkness. And while trapped in this nightmare-ish illusion, shadows of darkness would envelope her — consuming her body until she disappears. But just before she’s completely devoured by the shadows, someone in a black coat clears the darkness from her with a slash of light.

During their conversation they inform Aqua that they’ve been in the Realm of Darkness for a long time, stating they’ve “seen many worlds and many people fall from the grace light — only few return, many perish”. They urge Aqua to leave the Realm of Darkness before she’s swallowed by the darkness. Aqua asks who they are and they reply “I am no one — nobody”. Aqua gets confused and thinks they've lost their memories. They reply with emptiness, “Who I once was, I am no more. I am no one — nobody. And that I shall remain”. They then disappear into the darkness. Aqua wonders whether they were real or not. She continues her journey in the Realm of Darkness.

I haven’t felt the need to write any of these posts because the series’ story, for what it is, is aight even though I have my own criticisms of it. I’d rather put that time and energy into my own projects. Also, I'm not really interested in writing them. But it came to my mind today, so it's whatever.
