And he continued to ignore her. Mostly because her aura was so fun to watch when she got irritated and he knew ignoring a person was a great way to irritate them.

Dylan looked off into the distance, eyes narrowed as if watching something far more interesting than Vir-gin-ia. Then he looked at his pocket-watch, taking several long seconds to polish it on his shirt before opening it, checking the time, nodding with satisfaction.

He took his sweet time ignoring her, then cut his eyes to her. Dylan even acted startled to see her there not a few feet from him.

"Oh, m'sorry" —he wasn't— "I didn't see ya there. What was the question?"

Vivian had just caught her breath when it hitched in her throat and came out a gasp. She wasn't pinned, not quite, but he was very close, towering over her. There wasn't time for her to compose her face, to sort out what she felt and push it down before it showed. Naked emotion showed in her flushed cheeks, the brightness in her eyes. Annoyance at herself, that Wolf could see her wanting like this, flashed there too.

She set her jaw, lifted her chin. The look turned to something defiant, challenging. She said nothing, yet held his gaze with her own.

"You won't?"

"Missed you?" she said it with a scoff that sounded too similar to a snort and immediately regretted it. Now her cheeks were incredibly red. Yes, maybe she had missed Tyler, but Tabitha wasn't about to admit that out loud.

"You weren't gone long enough to be missed," she answered, giving him a thin smile. "I think you're assuming things again."

She didn't do that... did she? Maybe once or twice, when he teased her and she'd been too embarrassed to even look in Tyler's direction much less hold his stare.

So maybe Tabitha did look away, but why she did it was a mystery even to herself.

"You know," she said, purposely keeping her eyes fixed on her hands and not his face, "I don't have a single clue. Not one."

"What I did?" His voice scaled up, indignant, offended. "M'not the only one standin' here. This is a we problem. An us problem." Never mind it had been his prying that had disturbed the creature. Virginia was in this whether she wanted to be or not.

But it didn't seem to have noticed them yet. Good. They might get out of here unscathed. Or mostly unscathed, anyway.

Dylan took a step back, holding his arm out to bring her back with him, a protective gesture. "Step back slowly," he told Virginia, speaking in a quieter voice now, to not draw the creature's attention their way.

I could draw him, she thought, as her eyes traced the lines of his face. A portrait in charcoal, maybe. I'd have to get more, though. Or maybe I'll just do a pencil sketch. He really does have a nice face—

Tabitha realized, with a start, that she had been staring. Pink immediately flooded to her cheeks.

"I-I don't—"

Then she realized she had absolutely no clue what Tyler had asked her. For the next few seconds, she could only stare at him like a deer in headlights, stupidly frozen. Then she gave a little jerk of her head, as if to shake it, then laughed embarrassedly.

"I, uh, I don't think so?" Put on the spot, Tabitha couldn't think.

To be fair, Jamie wasn't exactly giving any kind of look. He sort of spaced out, only realizing he'd been staring when she brought it up.

"Sorry," he mumbled, sweeping his blond hair back from his forehead. "Didn't know I was." He gave a shake of his head, as if that could clear the drug-induced fog and reset the scene.

"Sorry," he said again, the apology trailed by a laugh. "I'm in my own world, and I don't think I'll be back in a long time."

Tabitha drew her arms around herself. She'd left in such a hurry she hadn't even grabbed her jacket, or her backpack. The weather was chillier here. She had never even thought of it; she hadn't thought of a lot of things.

Yet she had thought of Tyler, no hesitation, the first person to pop into her mind. Tabitha couldn't recall actually teleporting, just that she was in her room, and then at Tyler's, outside, and she was shivering. And when the breeze blew again, it was cold on her face. Quickly, she started to wipe at her wet cheeks and eyes with her sweater sleeve.

"Um. I—I'm sorry. I didn't mean to—" Her eyes bounced from the ground, to his shoes, his chest, his face, back to the ground until she finally just closed them.

"Can I—can I stay here for a little while?" Tabitha asked in a small voice.
