She didn't do that... did she? Maybe once or twice, when he teased her and she'd been too embarrassed to even look in Tyler's direction much less hold his stare.

So maybe Tabitha did look away, but why she did it was a mystery even to herself.

"You know," she said, purposely keeping her eyes fixed on her hands and not his face, "I don't have a single clue. Not one."

     “Gods, languages are just… so messed up sometimes.” Tabitha shook her head, taking a second to push her untamed curls from her face. “Like there’s mouse and mice. And then there’s house but not hice?” When she laughed, she let out a small snort, which made her suddenly self-conscious. Her hand momentarily went to cover her mouth, but soon fell away. Her next reply was a bit more reserved, subdued. “I just mean... it should be consistent, right?”

     She didn’t get the eyes just right, but she thought they were close. Once she colored them in, they might look more like Tara’s. She could always redo it, of course, and maybe even—

     Tabitha looked up, momentarily startled. Quickly, she closed the sketchpad, folding her hand over as casually as she could. “Uh… what? Sorry. What was that about an out-of-body experience?” She really hadn’t been listening, too absorbed in her drawing, but out-of-body experiences were a pretty neat talent to have.. “You’ll have to tell me if you’re joking or not because I’m totally clueless right now.”

"Missed you?" she said it with a scoff that sounded too similar to a snort and immediately regretted it. Now her cheeks were incredibly red. Yes, maybe she had missed Tyler, but Tabitha wasn't about to admit that out loud.

"You weren't gone long enough to be missed," she answered, giving him a thin smile. "I think you're assuming things again."

I could draw him, she thought, as her eyes traced the lines of his face. A portrait in charcoal, maybe. I'd have to get more, though. Or maybe I'll just do a pencil sketch. He really does have a nice face—

Tabitha realized, with a start, that she had been staring. Pink immediately flooded to her cheeks.

"I-I don't—"

Then she realized she had absolutely no clue what Tyler had asked her. For the next few seconds, she could only stare at him like a deer in headlights, stupidly frozen. Then she gave a little jerk of her head, as if to shake it, then laughed embarrassedly.

"I, uh, I don't think so?" Put on the spot, Tabitha couldn't think.

Tabitha drew her arms around herself. She'd left in such a hurry she hadn't even grabbed her jacket, or her backpack. The weather was chillier here. She had never even thought of it; she hadn't thought of a lot of things.

Yet she had thought of Tyler, no hesitation, the first person to pop into her mind. Tabitha couldn't recall actually teleporting, just that she was in her room, and then at Tyler's, outside, and she was shivering. And when the breeze blew again, it was cold on her face. Quickly, she started to wipe at her wet cheeks and eyes with her sweater sleeve.

"Um. I—I'm sorry. I didn't mean to—" Her eyes bounced from the ground, to his shoes, his chest, his face, back to the ground until she finally just closed them.

"Can I—can I stay here for a little while?" Tabitha asked in a small voice.

Oh gods, he must think her pathetic—crying like this. And over what? Hurt feelings?

Not for the first time was Tabitha thankful her hair hid most of her face. How attractive must she look—red-faced, puffy eyes, snot dripping out her nose. Quickly, she dabbed at her nose with the crumpled tissue clutched in her hand.

"Are you always an optimist?" She sniffed as she wiped her nose.

Her mind went completely blank. For a few seconds, she could only stare at him. The question hung in the air. He was waiting on a response, Tabitha realized. I have to say something. Anything.

She was certain he hadn't meant to stump her, and maybe she shouldn't have been stumped at all, but she was and now embarrassment overtook the previous shock. Had she been struck dumb? Senseless? What the hell was going on?

Her mouth opened, closed, pink rising into her face. Tabitha couldn't think of anything and said, lamely,

"Uh. A KitKat bar?"
