To the new (exploding) chandelier!
Phantom Tour First Performance Curtain Call
Thoughts on the new Phantom of the Opera US Tour
Overall good.
The costumes: The costumes definitely seem less detailed and brighter and sleeker like Halloween costumes. Christine not wearing the Star Princess boots is just bizarre, I couldn't stop looking at her feet. Christine and the ballet girls' wigs though? *chef's kiss* so super soft looking instead of the tight curls. Much more believable and gives them such a softer look.
The set: nothing terrible but again has some sort of cheaper look that I can't identify.
The cast: the two stars are Jordan Lee Gilbert (Christine) and Midori Marsh (Carlotta). Both have excellent ranges and acting skills. Jordan plays a sweet Christine who then becomes very bold and protective near the end. My favorite part of hers was near the end, she's fighting Raoul and reaching out to return to the Phantom. She tries to lunge and Raoul pulls her away.
One of the reasons for me picking these two actors as my favorite is also their interactions with one another. Midori was throwing Jordan's hands off her during Il Muto and pushed her down and poor Jordan (as Christine) is just in shock.
Isaiah's (Phantom) pre-recorded parts are very strong but he started weak - unsure of himself, body a little too all over the place. This will come with time playing the part. He pulled it together for PONR and the Final Lair. He plays a rough Phantom at the end, throwing Christine around.
As opposed to Daniel (Raoul) who started off strong and I think lost his appeal by the end (this honestly could be his acting and a way of leading into LND, because by the end I'm like, girl choose neither.) He also does not jump off the railing at the end, just puts his coat on the railing and confidently walks down the ramp š
Everyone around me seemed to love it. Phantom has many iterations. If this is someone's favorite, that's totally fine. My heart will always be stuck on Broadway ā¤ļø
Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll do my best to answer.
Phantom Opening Night Goofs:
1. Flickering left box light that wanted to party every time it went off-stage
2. At the end of the rehearsal, the piano started playing again over the violin solo.
3. Piangi: "When you met you wore your cloak." Or something like that lol.
