Just a quick appreciation post for my favorite forgotten early 2000s band! Unfortunately, they only released two albums and every member is untraceable.... Although I guess that's the status quo for the genre.

Video: Miner, ‘Better Instincts’
For their follow-up to 2014’s debut, “Into The Morning,” Miner spent five weeks recording in Seattle with Phil Ek, known for producing Fleet Foxes, the Shins, Modest Mouse and Band of Horses, to name a few. The new album is called “Tuanaki,” after an island in the South Pacific discovered by sailors in 1842, which vanished into the sea shortly thereafter. The band went big with the video for…

NEW MUSIC: Said the Whale - Father
A belated Father's Day gift from the Vancouver based indie pop band Said the Whale. Released as a one off track with a very Shins inspired sound. Maybe it has to do with the fact that it was recorded by Phil Ek? (Hint: He's worked with the Shins)
With lyrics about growing up as a grateful son mixed with harmonizing vocals, spirit lifting guitars and rhythm keeping drums this track is the perfect tribute to any good father. Why not grab it from iTunes and send it to your dad right now?
Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On (Part One)
Built To Spill were an post-rock band from Boise, Idaho, America. Their third album Perfect From Now On, released in 1997, was their first major label release. It was produced by Phil Ek, who has since gone on to record with The Shins, Fleet Foxes and Band Of Horses. Stylistically the album was a slight departure from their first two albums, featuring experimentation with longer song structures, philosophical lyrics, and the shift from their previously lo-fi sound.
The album was recorded three times. Singer/guitarist Doug Martsch initially attempted to play all the instruments except drums, but was dissatisfied with the results. He recruited old Built To Spill bassist Brett Nelson and newcomer Scott Plouf for the second recording, but the tapes were destroyed by heat when they were transported by car. The band rehearsed some more, then recorded the album a third time. Third time's the charm.
Containing only 8 songs with each track hovering around the 6 minute mark, conventional song structures were entirely abandoned for the album. Blending indie-rock with prog-rock, the sections within songs vary in tempo and intensity. The instrumental jams act as hypnotic drones that are essential to the full structure of the song.
Martsch's unconventional vocals call to mind the singing of Wayne Coyne, Neil Young and Isaac Brock. The lyrics are melancholic and introspective in nature, with clever existential one liners being strewn about the album: 'no one wants to hear what you dreamt about unless you dreamt about them', 'you can't trust anyone 'cause you're untrustable' and 'after a while it hurts to smile and if you laugh it's just a typical miracle'.
Perhaps the opening lines of the album, Randy's description of eternity, exemplify the albums messages most accurately: 'Every thousand years this metal sphere ten times the size of Jupiter floats just a few yards past the earth. You climb on your roof and take a swipe at it with a single feather, hit it once every thousand years 'til you've worn it down to the size of a pea. Yeah I'd say that's a long time, but it's only half a blink in the place you're gonna be.'
