Phil Coulson in a few words
*Something bad happens*
Phil: This is my fault. I crave death
Coulson: Prepare the Quinjet for disconnect.
LC: He knew your name.
Daisy: Mentioned HYDRA. Can’t be good.
May: May even be a trap.
Coulson: We’ll need ground tactical at the ready.
Daisy: You’re coming? [Coulson nods] Good. With Mack on bedrest we could use the extra muscle.
Coulson: Well, he’s the only one with extra muscles, but I’ll come anyway. We don’t know what we’re walking into.
[I love Daisy’s little smile - she doesn’t care what she’s walking into if she gets to walk into it with Coulson. It’s so cute that Coulson’s so deprecating about his muscles, and Daisy’s so supportive of her puny human sidekick’s muscles...]
I noticed that when Daisy has collapsed after having the vision following her attempt to grab Charles, that Coulson, after asking her if she’s okay and realising she’s not, tells her to breathe, whereas L/ncoln’s immediately demanding that she talk to him. For a medical student, he’s pretty useless in an actual real life medical situation.
S/mmons: You’re sure it was the future.
LC: My whole face was covered in -
Daisy: Uh-hmm
LC: And Coulson shoots you.
[Coulson’s face quite clearly states that’s NEVER gonna happen - he hasn’t forgotten finding her when Quinn shot her twice in the gut.]
Daisy: Yup.
Coulson: Then I’ll just as the question that someone should ask at this point. Is this even possible?
ShitzSimmons science babble.
Daisy: That guy Edwin predicted everything that happened.
May: Okay, got it. So we all agree it’s possible. Now what?
Daisy: I can change it.
Shitz: No.
Daisy: We can reverse engineer the visions, figure out where this went down and get there ahead of it.
S/mmons: Save that poor man.
Shitz: You can’t. [more science babble]
Daisy: I don’t wanna believe that. I can’t explain how it felt, but it was awful. I felt so helpless. I was inches away from him. I have to save him.
LC: Edwin called in with your name for a reason. Maybe you’re meant to change it.
Coulson: And we know what this homeless man Charles looks like.
May: And we’re running a search.
Coulson: If Daisy can remember details about the location and we get there in time -
Shitz: [science babble about space-time]
May: You’re hurting my brain. [Mine too, May, mine too!]
Coulson: Look, I don’t know if Fitz is right or if I even understand what he’s saying really, but HYDRA has this guy. And we gotta try to stop them. I think I might have a strategy.
LC: We’re all ears.
Coulson: All we have to do to guarantee that we change the outcome is not let Daisy out of the Base. [Deafening silence before Daisy - predictably! - objects.]
Daisy: What? No! I have to go help him.
Coulson: The one thing we know for certain is that Daisy was at the centre of these visions. Whereas May doesn’t appear in any of them.
Daisy: [gets to her feet] Look, I get the logic, but I can handle this myself.
Coulson: I’m sorry, May goes instead. [Tries to look more resolute/intimidating by putting his hands on his hips - nice try, Phil, but really, you’re just a precious baby deer, you can’t intimidate anyone, least of all Daisy!]
Daisy: Coulson! [She thumps the table then rounds it to step right into his personal space] I was meant to save him.
Coulson: If you wanna try to stop this man from dying, then this is how we’re doing it. Understood? [Daisy steps back and watches him, arms folded and clearly unimpressed.] Lincoln and I will chase down any intel on the homeless man. Daisy, remember every detail you can about where this happen, and then we’ll send May. No one else goes. I won’t pick up a gun until this is finished. And FitzSimmons will stay out of the damn snow.
[Oh Phil, babe - it’s cute you’re so worried about your superhero not-girlfriend, even though you know you’d never shoot her. But you should know better than to try and stop Daisy from doing the right thing when she’s determined to do it!]
Daisy looking at Charles’ carving of the robin, and worrying about him/whether she can in fact save him (because you know she’ll be wondering) just gives me all the feels.
And her interview with Polly Hinton is just heartbreaking too - she’s doing her best to be professional and keep it together, but you know she’s hurting on behalf of all three of the Hintons - even little Robyn, who she’s yet to meet.
(AAAANNNNDDD this got way too long, so there’s gonna be a part 2!)
I don’t think I’ll ever get over Coulson calling Grunt Wart a ‘deluded son of a bitch’ when the latter claims to still be a member of Coulson’s team.
Such a perfect moment from our little baby deer.
So I finished my re-watch of the end of S1 of AoS this morning, and I was left wondering if Fury’s ridiculous speech to Coulson about being an Avenger was a last ditch attempt by TPTB to keep the film fans on board (since it’s perfectly obvious that AoS!Coulson is NOT movie!Coulson except in the hands of the wrong writers).
Because the notion of Coulson as an Avenger is pretty absurd. Yes, he’s a good field agent, but he’s an even better profiler - he excels at spotting people’s potential, and at understanding them (except, you know, when they’re lying HYDRA scumbags! Which - not his fault!) - another reason to team him up with Daisy - she’s also great at figuring people out (’Repairs’ is such an *excellent* 5-star example of this skill of Daisy’s - a skill for which fandom (as usual!) gives her far too little credit.)
Coulson’s also excellent at emotional support - not just of Daisy (although, as befits the protagonist, she gets the lion’s share of support) but others too. Look at the way he talks to S/mmons in ‘A Hen in the Wolf House’ - encouraging her in that tricky role of working as a double agent inside HYDRA.
Coulson’s also great at getting the best out of people (true, things went south with Akela Amador, but he clearly learns from that mistake).
But an Avenger? Yeah, no, Phil Coulson is NOT an Avenger.

Seriously tho’ Phil
it’s easy to get Daisy’s name right - just keep saying it over and over to yourself. “Dai-” as you breathe in, and “-sy” as you breathe out - you’ll soon find it’s easy as breathing...
