Dear Mr. Science,
My address to pop culture icons like Bill Nye, and Degrasse Tyson who have decided to be proponents of genetically modified and patented life, while still attempting to maintain their status as authorities of science:
Corporate control of agriculture, low biomass industrial cultivars grown with high chemical use on broken tilled soil causing erosion and ecological collapse, and monoculture are the causes of hunger in the world, even when its overpopulated, most food produced still rots. The problem is not that there is not enough food, it is that it is being controlled by corporate overlords. GMOs have proven every time to produce less and since scarcity is abundance in capitalist systems, abundance is also scarcity. GMOs have been instrumental in destroying lands and farmers, crop species, and cultures, and have saved nobody. You cannot use a gene gun to promote beneficial mutations, only deleterious. more monoculture, more corporate agriculture, patents on life itself, it will only cause more starvation. Please do not say that the destruction of indian corn is the only hope for the survival of corn, or humans for that matter, we actually have more illnesses when we eat poison. Since the introduction of GMOs, consumption of glyphosate has gone from a teaspoon a year, to multiple quarts of herbicide per year. Please look to the actual people keeping the seeds from extinction in the face of corporate genocide before you buy into all the paid off studies conducted by those who are to profit from the proliferation of patents on life, GMOs, and corporate control of our indigenous seeds. The countless generations of indigenous women who developed these seeds for future generations yet unborn did not do millennia of work and plant breeding so that it could be destroyed now. Please divest from the destruction of my lands, my culture, and our bodies. Ecological diversity is required for food and clean water.
BT toxin is organic and safe to use when it is from the bacteria it is native to, and is sprayed on the plants topically so that the toxin can be washed away and destroyed by sunlight. when BT corn was developed it produced 1000s of times the levels of BT found in nature, and in every cell of the plant, making the BT toxin levels in human food higher than what the bacteria produces to be used as pesticide. BT toxin works by exploding the guts of bugs which eat the crop, and although these high amounts of BT toxin in human food do not cause the explosion of human guts, it does cause the microscopic perforation of the gastrointestinal lining causing a condition called "leaky gut syndrome." Leaky gut allows food molecules and particles that should not be allowed through the permeable membrane of the gut into the blood. The food and feces particles can then enter every other system of the body, including the brain, causing a litany of diseases which are currently skyrocketing in the USA, much to the pleasure of pharmaceutical corporations. leaky gut from GMO soy and corn causes allergy to wheat as the gluten finds the way into the blood causing an immune reaction to the protein. inflammatory and auto-immune diseases like asthma, eczema, arthritis, allergies, chron's, cancers, and others are caused by chronic exposure to "roundup ready" and BT toxin crops. They are patented and inbred versions of our native seeds and it is not honoring the spirit of the seed or our ancestors to replace indigenous seeds with poison. It is damning future generations who will face starvation beyond hope of return to a sane way of living. We are the living memory of the earth, like corn, and when you strip that memory away with viral promoters of genes inserted with gunpowder and inbreeding, you will be doing the opposite of solving world hunger.
The corporate elite view GMOs as a solution to overpopulation not because they produce more food, but because it sickens and sterilizes people resulting in lower population. It causes famine, that reduces population too.
Please do not confuse people who look to you for guidance, and see you exposing obvious fallacies, for instance, that global warming is merely a global conspiracy of scientists, and farmers. Science is the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, and in a time when the negative effects of GMOs are hidden from the people as well as their very existence in the food, when the corporations who own the patents hold government office to deregulate the products of their patents, science is not served by going with the grain. It is a time to stand for science that questions established theories, that is based in observation, biology that recognizes the importance of human beings over that of corporate patents on the perversion of life.
