I was never reallhy a fan of superhero shows/movies, but I've heard really good things about Jessica Jones. Would you recommend it to someone like me?
Honestly, this is the first superhero-related show I have ever watched (OK that is a lie I used to watch Batman: The Animated Series when I was a kid but I wasn’t 100% dedicated), and I was afraid I would get lost in all the Marvel references…fortunately, this is not that kind of show. It does a pretty good job establishing our main character and providing background info to better understand the kind of world she inhabits. I would tell anyone curious that there is some serious violence in parts and the first few episodes contain sex scenes (though they are brief and there is no gratuitous female nudity, so yay), but if that’s no big deal for you I would definitely give it a shot and try to stick it out past the first few introductory episodes because the show really hits its stride after that, and there are some really compelling characters.
Jessica makes a refreshing heroine because she doesn’t play coy and submissive, and beneath her prickly exterior she has a heart and will go to great lengths to exact justice and protect those she cares about. Of course, she is also flawed like the rest of us; traumatic events from her past drive her to seek redemption but she doesn’t always make the wisest decisions to get there. The plot is dark and twisting and keeps you guessing to the very last second. Oh and you don’t get a lot of annoying scenes where the dudes are like “Whoa you are STRONG,” it’s just kind of accepted that she has special abilities and that is that. So it’s pretty much a female-driven show, and I think you would appreciate that as well.
