Terrance grows long rows of crops for food and seed saving at La Mott Community Garden, in Cheltenham Township, just a few blocks northwest of Philadelphia. For more than 80 years community gardeners have been lovingly tending to this land where black soldiers had been trained for the Civil War, and where Harriett Tubman would stop at Lucretia Mott's home on her courageous and visionary trips bringing black families to freedom on the Underground Railroad. The garden had been owned by Temple University for many years, and was recently sold to a new owner, and so the garden's future is uncertain. Terrence brought his extra sweet potato slips (they look like Maple Leaf!), lima bean seeds, and string bean seeds to the Philadelphia Seed Exchange library seed swap last night, which followed the Vacant Land 215 workshop led by Kirtrina Baxter of Soil Generation and Garden Justice Legal Initiative. (2 photos) Aurora brought many varieties of her saved seed to the seed swap on Saturday, including a Sicilian Rocket (Eruca sativa) that her Uncle Steven from Sicily shared with her. Craving flavors from home, he is dissatisfied with American vegetables, saying 'they don't taste right'. And about our Arugula (aka Rocket): 'that's not Arugula, THIS is Arugula'. This variety is very peppery and delicious. We had a lovely Philadelphia Seed Exchange seed swap after the Vacant Land 215 skill share today. Bri Barton brought a couple beautiful bags of beans, including this Hopi Grey “Maasi Hatiko” Lima (Phaseolus lunatis) she’s been growing at Fair Hill Burial Grounds here in Philly. She said (roughly): “This is the first seed I ever saved and I started saving them four years ago. It is delicious both geeen and as a soup bean, and is incredibly prolific.” She’s a bean seed fanatic. Check out her coloring book about death @everybodycolors (which includes some beautiful castor beans). After four terrific years with Roughwood Seed Collection, in which I essentially got a doctorate in Seed Keeping from William Woys Weaver, I will be moving on to focus on my own projects, including putting more energy into the Philadelphia Seed Exchange, continuing to lead trainings on Seed Keeping and Popular Education, making a fourth album and playing shows with My Gay Banjo, and of course, growing and keeping seeds and their incredible stories. This will be yet another big leap - and I will be looking for collaborations, teaching gigs, seed growers, seed story tellers, farmable land in or near Philly, My Gay Banjo gigs, and folks who will support the work through donations, grants, and purchasing seeds, calendars, herbs, flowers, etc. So please be in touch! The seed swap tonight was a HUGE success! Thanks to the Free Library of Philadelphia's Culinary Literacy Program for hosting, to Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and Hudson Valley Seed Library for seed donations, and to all the amazing gardeners, farmers, and seed keepers who shared their seeds and knowledge. This is the third seed swap I've cohosted as the Philadelphia Seed Exchange, and it has been so much fun.
