I really hope that Derek Chauvin being convicted is the small beginning to a set precedent that holds policing more accountable in modern America.

Justice is a system where there are no more murders by cop, but for now we have an instance of accountability, and I think that’s such a wonderful breath of relief before work continues.

Four years ago today on July 6th 2016, Philando Castile was brutally gunned down by a police officer, in front of his daughter and girlfriend, during a traffic stop. Philando worked in a school cafeteria and often paid for students that could afford to buy lunch. He was beloved by the people he served. He deserves to be alive today and it’s a tragedy that he’s not.

St. Paul police are attempting to charge Louis Hunter, Philando Castille's cousin, with a felony for protesting. He is looking at 10-20 years in prison. 

He is being pinned because the system was mad they even charged killer cop Yanez. There are 30 other protesters standing in solidarity by not excepting any plea bargains! Please do your part by changing your profile to show you also support Mr. Hunter and his first Amendment right to peacefully protest the murder of his cousin. First they killed Philando for exercising his 2nd amendment now they wanna persecute Mr Hunter for his 1st amendment!

Charleena Lyles was murdered by Seattle PD on the morning of Sunday, June 18, 2017 after calling them for help, after her home was broken into. Her children were in the home with her when this assault happened – ages 11, 4, and 1. We also know that she was 3 months pregnant. Her family has shared that she suffered from mental illness as well. The assault on Black lives – including Black women – is a continued declaration of state sanctioned violence against our existence. Again, and again, and again the system refuses to allow us to be human, to be safe, to thrive, to flourish. In honor of the call to action from Valerie Castile, Philando Castile's mother, "Do what your heart desires!" we will be still be uplifting Philando through sharing facts of the case to the public, along with facts of his life. On July 6, 2016, Philando Castile was fatally shot by Jeronimo Yanez, a St. Anthony, Minnesota, police officer, after being pulled over in Falcon Heights, a suburb of St. Paul. Philando's girlfriend Facebook Live shared the video immediately after the shooting, while still in the car with her 4yo daughter, and the world watched Philando die. On November 16, 2016, John Choi, the Ramsey County Attorney, announced that Yanez was being charged with three felonies: one count of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of dangerous discharge of a firearm. Yanez was acquitted of all charges on June 16, 2017. The same day, he was fired by the City of St. Anthony.

As the aftermath of the George Floyd killing is happening and the protest are going on all around the world, I’ve been looking into my life.

I’m across the ocean from the US in a peacefull Lisbon, Portugal and I’m recalling my grandparents, on my morher side, life.

My grandfather was a white man from Porto following is dad into Angola while Angola was a portuguese colony. My grandmother was a black woman from a black family in the slumps in Luanda.

They fell in love but due to pressures from their families they married someone else more appropriate. 15 years later they came together, got married and had my mom.

A few years later during the colonial war that ended with Angola as an independent independent country, my mother and my grandparents had to run away and came to Portugal.

Going forward a few decades I was born to a light brown skin mother and a white father. I was never dark enough to be black but I have also never been light enough to be white. I have been called every derrogatory name by both sides of the coin. Kids can be cruel when they want! But so can the parents!

I’m turning 30 later this year and I thought that the worst I would feel would be by listening to the stories at our dinner table while I grew up. I was wrong! This last 10 days have shown us that everything that has been done in support has helped but it is not enough!

Stand tall! Raise your voice and if you can’t lend your voice. Listen before you say something! Educate yourself and then educate the others around you.

We need to do more, be more! Do and Be BETTER!

I finally broke down and watched the footage of george floyds murder. I can't begin to process what I just saw. the pain, the absolute heartache i feel for George Floyd cannot be measured in words. That's not something i should ever experience for a person i've never met. No ones final moments shoul ever be spent pleading to your last breath. slowly watching as the air flows out your lungs as your neck is trapped between a white man’s knee and the asphalt. I don’t pray. i never pray. But i feel so hopeless i have to pray. I pray for his mother and his family to find peace .That hopefully they can be brought together is this tragedy and that this collective trauma does not further break, divide and crush them. That in the times they falter, in the very moments of collapse we can hold them down and lift them up. The black community should be the umbrella that weathers the storm and the hand that holds this family steady in the tragic and difficult work to come. I'm writing this between tears. This could have been my dad. This could have been my brothers. This could have been my cousin. Honestly this is the only time i've been happy my cousin is in prison with his pride and life intact. George yelled “i cant breathe” till he lost his breath. Flelando castilles mother said it felt like deja vu. As if she was watching her son be pinned and killed over and over again. We have so much nationalism and pride for police who “put themselves in harms way” everyday, as they constantly inflict harm and violence on the black community. The police are not strong. the police should not be proud. they are white supremacist through and through. hate criminals that make our streets a prison and our black sons and daughters victims to oppression. Black women are strong. Black women are proud. Every black mother is forced to relive this trauma. These black mothers who face this hatred and racism as they watch their sons die everyday. Who decide to find that fire in their breast, pull it up like their braids collect it, wrap it up, and do the work only a black woman can do. That right there is power. That right there is pride. I don’t see any solace in this tragedy. Covid nineteen has already racked and debilitated the black community and george floyds murder is further evidence that even when we are broken, and tired, and dying white america will continue to burn us on the coals. We will never die fast enough for them. Every black, brown, white, trans, queer or indingenous person needs to hold it down. In this tragedy, this is hopelessness. We need to grit our teeth, find what little heat we have left in us, and lift each other up. Lift up so every black man doesn’t need to fear for his life. Everytime he turns a corner, everytime he goes for a jog, everytime he wears a hoodie, everytime he comes home, everytime he takes a breath, should not be the last time. I don’t want these deaths to be forever immortalized as an illustration of the futility of fighting back and keeping on. I don’t want to show my kids emmet till, philando castille, and now george floyd and tell them “this could be you one day”. I want this to be the last time a black person needs to die like a dog in the street just so a white person can tell us how much we matter. I never pray, but i’m gonna pray today. Because i don’t wanna see this hope snuffed out before it even gets time to get started.
