One of America’s greatest playwrights, Wilson is hailed as a trailblazer for helping to bring nonmusical African American drama to the forefront of American theater. August Wilson was born Frederick August Kittel in Pittsburgh, PA, on April 27, 1945. After dropping out of high school, he became a voracious reader at the local library, served in the Army for a year, and worked a variety of jobs. In 1965, the year he took the surname of his African American mother, he discovered the blues, which inspired a lifelong fascination with the importance of music and oral tradition in African American culture. With a traditional palette of red, green and white, illustrator Kirsten Ulve channeled her love of Christmas, vintage ornaments and Scandinavian folk art to create unique digital illustrations of four holiday icons: a prancing reindeer with antlers; an ornament tied with a bow and ready to hang; a tree topped with a star; and a stocking holding a teddy bear and a sprig of holly. Originally planned for the APS Great American Stamp Show that had to be canceled due to Covid-19 concerns, these stamps were instead issued at APS headquarters on the same day the show would have started. The issue celebrates the American spirit of innovation with five different designs, each representing an area in which U.S. scientists and engineers have made significant contributions: Computing, Biomedicine, Genome sequencing, Robotics and Solar technology. One of America’s greatest playwrights, Wilson is hailed as a trailblazer for helping to bring nonmusical African American drama to the forefront of American theater. #usstamps - Commemorative Series of 1948. William Allen White - a block of four 3-cents stamps. Journalist and Editor, born 1868, Emporia, KS. Attended College of Emporia and Univ. of Kansas, where he worked on the school paper and as correspondent to several papers. Started his newspaper career with the El Dorado Republican, and on June 1, 1895, took over the Emporia Gazette where he remained for 49 yrs. His short stories and sketches gave him wide reputation as an interpreter of life in the country towns of the Middle West. Died Jan. 29, 1944. #usstamps - Joseph Pulitzer. Commemorative Series of 1947. Born in 1847 at Mako, Hungary. He came to the U.S. in 1864 and enlisted and served in the Civil War. Later found work as a reporter on a German language newspaper in St. Louis. Became a naturalized citizen in 1867, and elected to the Missouri legislature in 1869. Studied law and admitted to the bar in 1876.
