I DON'T THINK WE'RE GRASPING THE FULL EXTENT OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF DONKEY KONG CD-I
Imagine if DK CD-I released in '91. It completely sullies Donkey Kong to the point that Nintendo doesn't want to back future stand-alone games. Rare becomes a second-party developer for Nintendo around '94 and either they don't want to make Donkey Kong Country anymore or Nintendo tells them no. They make something much less successful. Nintendo loses faith in them and cuts them loose.
NO DONKEY KONG COUNTRY. Maybe side-scrollers rebound but they lose a cornerstone of the genre.
NO BANJO-KAZOOIE. Do collectathons take off the same way?
And most importantly...
NO 007 GOLDEN-EYE. The game that spearheaded console FPS multiplayer doesn't exist. How long does it take for another game to lead the charge? How far back are console FPS games set? Are games like Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc. pushed back years or do some of them even come out at all?
Donkey Kong CD-I could've caused an insane butterfly effect all because of Rare. As hilariously awful as it would've been for YTPs it's better for the world that it didn't survive.
Wait, wait, someone actually made a game based on THAT?!
(Sees its for the CD-i)
Logical.
For those curious, back in the 90s, while he was wrestling in WCW, Hulk Hogan also starred in a series called "Thunder in Paradise". Initially a direct to DVD movie from the creators of Baywatch, it became a 1 season series starring Hogan and Chris Lemmon.
Certain WCW and pro wrestling stars also appeared in the series, most notably Sting, Jimmy Hart and Jim Neidhart.
...it's cheesy yes but I rather watch this than "Velma." And that should tell you just how much I do not want to see "Velma".
Hotel Mario for the Phillips CD-i officially released 30 years ago as of today, April 5th, 2024
I tried but I couldn’t get my game footage to sync up with the song.
Ever wondered how Brain Dead 13 would look with a little AI, up-scaling magic? Probably not. (Sourced from Phillips CD-i release)
CD-I Zelda Games Get PC Remasters
Finally some gaming news relevant to weirdos like me. The infamously-bad CD-i Zelda games - the bastard children of Nintendo’s beloved franchise got a overhaul courtesy of amateur developer “Dopply”
Dopply’s remasters give us a much more solid experience; no sluggish controls, or heavy character movement here. Walking speed is faster and attacks are much more fluid. In short, it’s a major improvement.
Other improvements are subtitles for those sweet, sweet cutscenes, controller support, an autosave feature and much more.
If for whatever reason you have no clue what I’m talking about, I’ll provide a brief and fairly uneducated summary. Nintendo licensed out the Zelda series to Phillips for their CD-i console in the mid 90s. As a result the CD-i got a trilogy of Zelda games: Faces of Evil, Wand of Gamelon and Zelda’s Adventure. All three games are universally panned and only found merit years later when the cheesy cutscenes made their way onto Youtube for thousands of jerks to cut up and give hilarious re-edits to.
I can remember trying to play Faces of Evil via emulation some time ago and just hating it. I was attempting to capture footage for GIFs but the game controlled and played so badly - even with the benefit of emulation, that I put it down and never looked back.
Does the remasters make them great games? Not great, but ok. they’re full of charm and I recommend anyone with a PC to at least give them a try. Sprites and backgrounds have this great watercolor look to them I appreciate so much more. The cutscenes are still corny but they’re full of charm and considering the time that these were produced, they’re pretty cutting edge.
Unfortunately, due to Nintendo’s strict stance on fangames, I can’t provide a link here, but if you do some digging you’ll find them fairly easily.
You can visit Dopply’s Twitter and give him a “thanks” for his hard work. I hope this starts a trend of developers fixing bad games.
