THESE PEOPLE DO NOT EXIST

In the recent tutorial and lecture, we discussed the progression of design and where it will take us. We looked at ‘This Person Does Not Exist’. I think the first I’d heard of the website a year or two ago, when another artist mentioned using the programme in one of their own projects, and I took to Google for some understanding. I haven’t really needed to use it since then, except for the tutorial where we created collages. I did mine digitally, and had saved a variety of images from a variety of sources, including people from ‘This Person Does Not Exist’.

Every time the page is refreshed, a new shockingly-realistic, yet artificially-developed face is depicted on the screen. Phillip Wang, a former Uber software engineer, designed the platform, and each image is created using a special kind of artificial intelligence algorithm, called ‘generative adversarial networks’ (GANs). Other technology companies including Google and Facebook, are also developing versions of this AI technique, with plans to integrate “fully fleshed out virtual worlds” in the real world, using automated methods instead of complex coding.

It is so cool and exciting that this is where technological advancements have taken us, but at the same time, it is very frightening.
