Concept: joshnekushiki but it's from Hazuki's point of view and he's just very confused at Joshua's behaviour towards those humans
do you remember anything from your past life? what happened the day you died at the hands of the cult, exactly?
As for what happened that day.
It is reserved for another.
Another who asks.
Oh please. You think dying young is suffering? How bout watching everything and everyone you love die right in front of you, and you're hopeless to do anything but watch. And every single day, you are reminded of their deaths, and it torments you to know you should have done more.
Just because you went through something horrible, it does not mean you should consider it worse than what another person went through.
Of course, it’s understandable to feel pain for it, but saying you suffered more than someone else without fully knowing what they had to endure is being outright disrespectful and immature.
Such an attitude just shows how selfish you are.
You don’t know what I’ve been through.
What is the meaning of life?
I know it better than anyone.
Hey there!

uhh i guess that's all for now! see you sometime soon.
I think there's a kind of tension that results in one side claiming "pain and suffering are good or at least acceptable if they are natural and hard to avoid causing" and the other side adopting a Calvinist "most of the world deserves to burn in hell" outlook, and it's caused by seeing "evil" as something that means anyone doing it is beyond saving and needs to be brutally punished. Which does end up meaning that you can't call common forms of cruelty "evil" because that would imply that we should be brutally punishing most of the world, and it's pretty obvious that "brutally punish everyone" is not an improvement on the current state of things.
(There are people who will bite said bullet and claim it is an improvement because it's just or whatever, see aforementioned Calvinists, but that's kind of horrifying.)
So "most people in the world are at least passively complicit in horrifying things" is very hard to accept but I think that's largely because the way far too many people think about morality would make accepting that as fact feel like an existential threat.
Continuing the "what makes someone human" train of thought: I remain convinced that that's a bad question to ask, but some questions that cover the same kind of ground that I do find interesting would be:
Is there any trait that is universally needed for something to develop consciousness or self awareness? (Not in the sense of physical limitations like "must have this this complex a nervous system" but more like, any aspects of consciousness/self awareness which, if removed, cause the whole consciousness to collapse)
What is the least amount two beings need to have in common to be capable of any kind of communication?
What is the least amount in common etc to form a community?
How would we recognise consciousness that differs sufficiently to human consciousness?
What are the limits imposed on consciousness by the way the human brain is structured?
etc.
