How Project Hail Mary characters spent 2020 quarantine
Grace: Was being introduced to every pet of the school via. Zoom calls. He eventually set aside a minute of class as pet show and tell, and even that went downhill when Ethan from first period showed off Slinky the ball python.
Stratt: Joined the bandwagon of writing essays on The Decameron. She actually was able to publish a short paper on how food availability effected it’s writing.
Carl: ‘That’s classified.’ (In all seriousness, he was probably working at Area 51 or something.)
Dr. Lamai: Simultaneously working on developing COVID treatments and watching her company tank.
Dr. Illukhana: Video calling friends, day drinking, and not wearing any clothes while alone in her apartment.
Dr. DuBois: Getting way too invested in the data analysis of the whole thing. His family is correctly saying that he’s freaking himself out, but he’ll deny it until the cows come home.
Dr. Lokkan: Publishing papers nonstop and fighting conspiracy theorists on the internet in her spare time.
Dr. Yao: Trying not to get mind numbing oh bored by distracting his kids.
Rocky: What COVID question?
Does anyone ever think about Stratt x Lamai because there are two lines in the book that made me go Hmm.
Lamai says she's glad her research might still help humanity and then:
"Understatement," Said Stratt. "Your technology might save humanity."
Lamai averted her eyes. "You compliment me too much."
Which could mean nothing. But I have yuri-'d for less.

Methinks there’s some good yuri potential in Lokken x Ilyukhina and Lamai x Ilyukhina. Something something the fact that Lokken and Lamai are being entrusted with the astronauts’ lives (Lokken because she’s building the ship that must carry them for years and Lamai because she’s making the robot that’s supposed to take care of them while they’re asleep). And then of course the tragedy of Ilyukhina being fated to die in space.
Imagine the yuri potential of Stratt trusting Lamai to be her accomplice in using the amnesia drug on Grace. That’s Lamai’s nurse robot that’s delivering the drug, it seems likely that she had to be in on it. Imagine Lamai struggling with the morality, of going against her oath as a doctor to do no harm (IDK if they use the Hippocratic Oath in Thailand but regardless the ethical commitment would be on her mind).
Imagine Stratt feeling guilty for dragging Lamai into it, because it’s clearly hurting Lamai to do it, and Stratt thinks she (Stratt) should be the one shouldering all the burden.
Imagine Stratt secretly being relieved that it isn’t just her who has to carry the weight of Grace’s execution. And hating that part of herself, because Lamai is good, she’s nothing like Stratt at all, and now Stratt has forced her to do something terrible. Not that she didn’t force a lot of people to do terrible things (rip Leclerc) but this was so much more personal.
Imagine Stratt coming clean about forcing Grace on the mission to the world and trying to make it look like Lamai had nothing to do with it.
Imagine how horrible Dr. Lamai would feel when the beetles returned and she learned her robot failed to keep Ilyukhina and Yáo alive. Poor woman spent YEARS on that nursing bot, put her heart and soul into it, and it FAILED.
