Frankly, I think power systems and power scaling are dumb as hell. And setting out to write with an intense focus on making this whole complicated and detailed Sandersonian Magic system is a recipe for disaster or burnout if you don't have an actual plot in mind.
Like, clearly it *can* work, hence the 'Sandersonian', but the circumstances surrounding things require more specificity. The best "power systems" are loose as hell and prone to changing with the next issue or novel in a series, or they're of a particularly random variety to the point its just a setting with powers, rather than a setting built to serve a power system.
I get that I'm a Worm fan so this may sound hypocritical, but my least favorite aspect of it (beyond a lot of stuff introduced in Ward and specific peculiarities in Wildbow's online behavior and fan interaction) is the unification of the power system. It's a well done system admittedly, but I couldn't care less for how shards pick hosts or the Entity cycle or any of the sci fi frosting to the story. The good part of Worm powers are in how they tie into character trauma, and the good part of Worm is in the characterization and development of relationships over time, not in the drawn out fights or cape matchups.
Not going to say people can't be obsessed over power systems or power scaling, and I wouldn't stop them even if I had the ability, but its certainly not for me and this blog is a place to share my thoughts on things anyway.
