1962 ‧ Sci-fi Shortfilm ‧ 28 mins
La Jetee is a French short film which is made with photographs. The 1962 film surpasses the conditions of its time and presents its viewers with the theme of science fiction, the past and the present. In the movie, people who had experienced the third world war in the future have now started to live underground and scientists have made the inter temporal transition possible with various experiments. Our main character, who takes part in one of these experiments, is sent back to the past. The man who goes to find a solution to the fate of the world actually sees something quite different there, love.
The film, which consists entirely of black and white photographs, is a proof of how successful you can be with still images in the cinema.photographs voiceover and short narration at the very beginning allow us to easily comprehend the story.Considering that period, it seems very brave to work on a science-fiction genre, especially to explain this with black and white photographs. As a result, it is an undeniable fact how successful Chris Marker and Jean Cabut have been.
While watching the movie, the most interesting issue for me was how to talk about three different time periods such as the past and the present by using only black and white photographs. The use of different lights in the photographs in order to show the transition between times more clearly impressed me.I was impressed by watching a movie like a photo novel. I think that the value of cinema will increase even more if such films are made today.
